jmb3450's Journal, 15 Jan 16

Friday thank goodness! At least for myself and others who work M-F jobs. I'm looking forward to the 3 day weekend although there are 2 funerals to attend and help out with.

This week has been good for staying on track and that feels good. I've pretty much stayed under my RDI and haven't felt hungry doing it. I find sticking to the right foods actually makes it easier. Less hunger, no real cravings, no "sugar magnet" drawing me to eating crap foods. And no mini candy bars which have been one of my struggles before. As long as I don't sabotage myself tonight when we eat out (date night) I should be on track for a loss this week. FYI I do not plan on any self-sabotage, feeling pretty confident in that regard. I'm pumped up to keep on track, blow through my initial goal of 190 lbs and continue on to at least 180. Been flirting with 190 for way too long and time to knock it out of the way. Plus I'm tired of the stubborn pockets of fat I see in the mirror and want to see them at least shrink!

I've seen so many people post about how the holidays derailed them, a month of baked goods, holiday treats, etc. Happened to me too, at least from Christmas Eve to the first week of January. My wife and I were talking about it, we're going to try to make some changes for next year like NOT baking cookies and then having to deal with them being around and a constant temptation (a battle we never win). Seems things like that are a tradition and deeply ingrained into our minds, like how can we have Christmas without them? But maybe we can work on changing that next year making some healthier things.

One thing my wife did that I liked and would like to do again next year was make some meringue cookies. She used about 1/3 sugar and 2/3 stevia, all stevia just didn't cut it. It was a compromise, but pretty low calorie, low carb with some protein, and they tasted really good. Red and green food coloring made them look pretty festive for the season.

So at this point our plan for next year is to break from unhealthy traditions and work on making some new ones, healthier ones. Just need to keep that mindset for another 11 months! Have a great Friday.

JMB -- Can I 'cut and paste' your 2nd and last paragraphs into my Journal? I could identify with it ALL (just need to substitute 190/180 with 140/130)! :) Enjoy your 'TGIF' and weekend.

Congrats on the mindset! You can do it, and it will take you a long way! One thing that helped me through the holidays was to eat at home, and pick only a couple of things that would make the holiday still seem like a holiday, and then do a LC version of it. I didn't have any trouble avoiding dessert, but I did want my stuffing and cranberry sauce. So, I had the LC version. It was pretty darn good to me.

Great idea to pre-plan the holidays. I only baked one type cookie but did 2 batches. Usually do 3 different cookies and 3-4 pies. No pies at all. Had a slice of apple that niece made and that was it. Tough to do but can be done.

Nice post Jim. I agree with you. Sticking to the right foods actually does makes it easier...

I so agree with you - my husband and I can't resist the homemade holiday cookies. We did not even try to cut the sugar with stevia - good idea. We follow the alternative day diet and we (pretty much) keep to that during the holidays and that, along with exercise, helps keep us from gaining (too much). But, for me, I've accepted that I am going to gain a couple lbs during the holidays, and just tighten the belt afterward. You are brave and I wish you all the best with your holiday plan. Personally, don't have it me - but feel encouraged by you - maybe, I will work my way into that mindset - I never thought I could cals down to 500 (every other day - then normal cals 2300) and I did it - so anything is possible if you just get the right mindset. It sounds like you have a great mindset. BEST WISHES!!!!

TGIF Ditto! Too bad about the funerals. Keep your spirits up. I am finally feeling happy again and expect it to continue. Have a great weekend!

I love witnessing your lifestyle change. And knowing that your best friend is on board is beautiful. Keep it going! Happy Friday!

Great points about the holiday temptations. I need to plan to do the same. We bake so much for the family to enjoy and end up eating all that's left over ourselves - not a healthy practice. I'm still fighting my weight back down to pre-holiday levels.

Sounds like a healthy plan for now and the future. About the pockets of fat you see in the mirror, one day they'll just be gone. I feel the same way about mine, but honestly if I had the money I would have mine removed with a cold laser.

Thanks eveyone for the comments. I pretty much agree with you Bill. My problem is moderation itself, and if we have lots of cookies and stuff in the house I'll indulge too much. Unique to my situation is I have heart disease, sugar causes inflammation which is the root of the problem. So in a real sense I'm eating poisen. I'd like to have better self control, instead of literally being out of control at those times. So trying to find that point of balance and control, it's there somewhere! :)

Everything gets easier with practice - even holidays without a kitchen full of diabetes-causing treats. Gift red wine or fruit baskets to loved ones, and practice upcoming holidays (like Valentine's Day on Feb. 14th) as preparation for T-giving & X-mas. Dinner at a restaurant can be replaced with going to the theatre or skiing instead.

HCB... true. Working to get in the same mindset with exercising.

I gave away half a large pecan pie and then half of the whole meal leftovers to my daughter and her boyfriend to eat on the rest of their week. Kept her from grocery shopping. LOL! We always make too much food. I never got in the habit of baking all the cookies. I wouldn't be able to stay out of them. I have started a tradition of Spicy Pecans though and what a healthy treat that is! My daughter asks for them every year now. It makes the house smell so good when baking. I love your mindset. I have found one, too, I believe. I am sick of hanging around the same weight as well. YAY to all of us that have set our minds to the task~!
