jmb3450's Journal, 26 Oct 15

I believe I'm having a flare up of sciatica in my right hip and leg. Interesting as usually it's affected me more on my left side. It's gotten pretty bad over the past day and I'm limping around. So that'll put any running on hold for a while, I think that's actually what brought it on. Been needing to do more strength training and I don't think that'll bother it so on the positive side I'll focus more on that. Was reading this morning that alternating cold massage with moist heat helps so will try that in evenings. I've also been bad lately about eating sugar which leads to inflammation and I believe that's part of the issue. So there's some good motivation to cut out the cheats I've been allowing myself lately.

Hope you feel better soon. Could be an piriformis syndrome?

Do you do any stretches before you walk, run or strength training?

CatHerder it's possible piriformis syndrome is what's going on. I also have some arthritis in my lower back and I fractured my L5 vertebra when I fell off my roof in December '13. So who knows...hopefully some TLC will make it better. Kathy I'm sure I do not do enough stretching and need to do more. Been reading this morning about some stretching exercises that should help.

I also was thinking piriformis or the IT band which can pull on the hip. stretches and maybe find a good person who does Rolfing would help. Rolfers manipulate the fascia around the muscles and it really helped when I was injured last year.

You should also try doing some foam rolling if you can! It will break up any tension in the muscle that you might have!

You know, Jim, I always had problems with my lower back. I was always told not to lift too heavy because it's hard on the back. I couldn't figure out why being weaker was being advised as a way of safeguarding my back, so I started doing deadlifts. The back problems went away, though if I go more than a week without a good solid set of deads (with a good belt) my lower back starts to ache again. I think the muscle supports the back properly and gets things back in line rather than letting it go wherever. My stomach used to go wherever too.

I have sciatica problems occasionally and have discovered two stretches that give considerable relief if done often enough through out the day. If your interested send me a message and I'll type them up for you.:D I'm going to look into that strength training this week since I can't work out as often as I would like because of the breathing issues these allergies are creating. I'm not giving up though!

So not sure on hard cold surfaces like metal chairs, or concrete. These will cause it to flare up even after you get it under control with the exercises.

First I'm sorry you suffer with sciatica and thank you for posting about it. I have been too embarressed to say anything about this or the fact I've had arthritis since I was 9. Several months ago I realized I had sciatica running down my right hip and leg. Sometimes it is so bad I'm unable to take a normal step for a while. Your post has confirmed what I had been turning over in my mind, sugar consumption leads to inflammation. Yesterday, I didn't get much exercise and I had a lot of sugar in one form or another. This morning extreme sciatica. Thank you again, now I know I'm not nuts!

Scalewatcher3, I definitely notice a difference when I go off track and eat too much sugar, the effect is pretty quick, within a day. I'm better off avoiding any added sugar in my food. Try cutting it out of your diet and see if it makes a noticeable difference.

Feel ur pain with the sciatica. It's hard to stay motivated when ur in pain. I have sciatica and arthritis under my kneecap, both on the right side. If I push to hard on the exercising I pay for it. I just try to keep moving" in sum kind of way to burn calories. Don't get frustrated.....just keep moving.

Wildpot it does feel better to keep moving. It's starting again after sitting a while that hurts the most.

I get sciatic pain here and there too, so I feel your pain. Have you checked in to Acupuncture? It can really help along with the stretching and foam roller others have mentioned. Hopefully you will be feeling better soon!
