The thing for all to remember is that this is a new virus for humans. It has been in the animal world but this is the first crossover to humans. We have nothing to prevent or specifically treat this virus except to treat the symptoms and offer care in the form of mechanical respiratory support via ventilators. This virus hits the lungs causing hardening and stiffness of the lung tissue which makes breathing effectively and adequate oxygen exchange impossible.I have heard people critical of the medical world because there aren’t more ventilators. Look at it this way— let’s say that you and your spouse are the only drivers in your family. Occasionally one car breaks down and you make due for a few days or borrow one from a friend or family. That’s what hospitals do— in a pinch they help each other out, lending and borrowing equipment in a pinch for minor local disruptions. So how many extra cars are you going to keep in your yard just in case both of your cars go out at the same time as do the cars of everyone you know.

In a previous post I mentioned some of the risk factors and co-morbidities for the Corona virus causing extreme respiratory illness. Among those I listed was diabesity (diabetes and obesity) I received a scathing PM accusing me of “fat shaming”. That is not it at all. Many (most) obese people carry a good amount of their weight in their abdomen— especially women. These rotund abdomens and round chest cavities effectively prevent full expansion of the lungs resulting in compromised respiratory efforts.

Since we can’t stop the virus or cure the illness yet, the only sensible thing we can do is try to slow the contagion so our medical system does not collapse. When we remove access to interaction between the virus and a new host the virus can die a natural death and/or lose virility. That is what is being attempted by social isolation and voluntary quarantine. Hang in there, but this will not be over anytime soon. Check on your elderly neighbors, can you share some milk, bread eggs, TP.

This is not a drill, but it is an incredible test for us to determine how we might respond in even greater crisis, like war on our home front, or massive earthquakes. We have to learn from this experience and be even more prepared next time.

Thank you, kenna!! There is a ton of misinformation out there (some regularly consumed by my nearest and dearest, grrrr). I have been hoping some of our fs medical professionals might post about this. No point in me doing it, bc i don't have any expertise to back it up. So ty. Please keep posting.

Kenna_ I support you. and all of your posts. There should be no debate on how people should respond or not respond at this time. Many will respond to what the CDC, local and state government ask of us and be very cautious and others may be less cautious. As with all things in life I will be more cautious. I have been wearing a seatbelt for 44 years and never been in a car accident. I buckle up for safety every day... this is no different. So social isolation, preparing myself to be quarantined is just common sense.

Thank you for this! Definitely love your viewpoint and I think we should definitely be checking on the elderly neighbors! It is indeed a very big test upon us and although the negatives I hope we can all help each other through this

Many years ago I had a sick kid who had huge medical bills so I signed up to do a stint in Mexico, as a nurse, during a Bubonic Plague epidemic. I spent about 3 weeks there in very poor villages with few medical resources. I did what I was told to do to protect myself and did it diligently. I survived and came home with a paycheck that solved my most immediate financial problems. We in this country have been incredibly lucky and we are so spoiled. Our “can’t happen here” attitudes is what can ultimately do us in.

Yeah. We need to stay healthy and follow the recommendations and rules right now. Protect those who are in danger

Thank you for your valuable expertise, coming from one many here will have learned to trust over time. We must all be as cautious as possible during these dark times, with an understanding of the science and its current limitations. Thanks for being here for the community, and stay well!

Based on evidence of hoarding and price gouging... This has been an interesting study of human interaction.

This is a time for kindness ( which should be a daily practice) this is going to impact us more then not being able to go places. Grandparents, parents, even though it doesn’t seem to hit children the way it does adults🙌 it is still unknown and we have very ill children here🥺🥺😇 many here are over 65, many here have autoimmune issues. I am scared as hell 🥺😩 I am hoping our friend Binky is just taking a break ♥️♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏 I get this, I could potentially end up on a ventilator. Same with my parents and many others. Love and prayers to all♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏🙏💜💚

I just want to emphasize, that when the vaccine comes out. Get it! Don't complain about this stuff now and then start saying "well, I never got COVID-19" or "I heard it makes you walk backwards and upside down".
