I tightened my belt one more notch this morning, not ready to go down in waist size on pants yet but there's some progress being made. I need to work more on my core and tighten up there. Have been having increased pain in my hips so for now I will stop running stairs and switch to a programmed routine on my recumbent bike for HIIT type cardio work, less impact and stress on the joint doing that. Might consider some x-rays or MRI's, it's nothing unbearable but if there's something going on I'd like to know what it is. My hip area is fairly stiff and sore after driving for a while or sitting at work but that loosens up after a few minutes walking. If I pivot my body with my right foot planted that can be painful. I'm thinking stretching exercises daily might do me some good so that will be the first plan of action along with some cinnamon and tumeric daily.

Weight is back down to 197.6 this morning, goal for the week is to hit below 196 by Saturday's weigh in.

Why don't you try Pilates for core? As someone with lots of spine issues (osteoarthritis) I can tell you that Pilates is very gentle while still doing a good job. Search youtube for some instructional videos for core exercises for people with spine problems. Also, you can buy a Pilates ball either on ebay or or amazon fairly cheap. And you might want to get one of those small tens units, the Igia electrosage8, you can find it on ebay for $20-$30.

One more notch, that is wonderful news. I agree with Dayberndt about the pilates, if you have a hip problem you don't want to aggravate. Running the stairs has to be very hard on your joints, especially knees.

Consider a deep tissue massage. Works wonders.

Awesome NSV AND SV! Sounds like you've got a good plan and good suggestions above for the aches and pains.

Try a rowing machine. It's a great workout without the stress on your hips and knees.

Wow - you are losing inches! I had a hip thing going on when I was using the treadmill last Fall - I now us elliptical so you may be right about switching up the motion by using something different for a while. I also use a foam roller to stretch out the little painful places - it really works !

You got this Jim :). Sounds to me you got issues with your hip flexors. Trouble with 'just' stretching is: most show you just one-directional stretches. What I recommend is finding someone who specialises in movement. I have never had less pain in my life. And given the issues I had with my lower back, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder and a sore knee, all I can say is: Its worth it :)

Thanks for the tips. I read or heard somewhere that for every extra pound of weight we put 3 pounds extra stress on our hips. So continuing to lose weight and also reducing impact should help. Wonder if I could talk my wife into giving me a massage...

Great work, man! Probably unrelated, but... I developed ankle/ foot pain walking indoors at the Y (rubber coated concrete) and switched to stationary bike. This turned out to be the wrong move. My problem was actually repetitive motion, not contact, and locking into a fixed rotation plane (bike) made it (inflamed tendon wrapped beneath ankle) worse. I had to wear a splint or high tight boots for a while to get it to heal. I now walk on gravel track or lawn to increase the planes of motion, wearing stiff soled shoes. And, massages are effective and wonderful when you can get them.

Jim, congrats on the notch. I'm loving my TRX type training straps made by WOSS. No impact and it's all core all the time even if you are concentrating on a different area ie legs or arm, your core is always working. I can feel a huge difference in my body after a month--- with osteo, arthritis, and a cervical fusion it's working for me. You might want to check them out online. Also lots of youtube videos.

I agree yoga is the ticket, it combines both strength and balance not just a bunch of ohms.

Great feeling to tighten up the belt, I'll bet. Sounds like you are back in the groove. Hope you can find your hip's happy place. :)

Being able to tighten your belt is great! You can also look into dynamic stretches for your hip flexors. I find those are good if I have been sitting too long.

Good for you! I have the occasional back pain, hip pain due to exercise. I go see my chiro and she fixes me up! It seems you can knock things out of alignment in your spine do certain exercises.

You guys are great, thank you so much for the comments and support. I care about and appreciate each of you. Going to check out info. on hip flexors and will also look into yoga. A lady friend from church has been encouraging me to try it, has helped her a lot.
