Today was my oldest brother's birthday. RIP to my dear brother. Feeling sad. This is a weight related entry.

A lot of good and bad memories are on my mind. I have two brothers and two sisters. This was the oldest brother. When I was a child and teenager he teased me unmercilessly about being larger than others. I never let him get by with his taunts :) That is another story. He taunted my other siblings over their weight too. He was very active as a teen, physically fit, won trophies as a excellent high and low board diver, and did well weight-wise until he was in the Navy. My other brother and I were very active too but seemed to stay on the heavier side anyway :)

Eventually, of course, we mended our fences and enjoyed talking to each other. As an adult he gained a lot of weight, smoked a lot, loved his beer. He never was concerned about his weight. Didn't matter to him what the doctor said. He adjusted to carrying around an oxygen tank. He became diabetic, etc. His final days, the doctor put him on a liquid diet. He weighed over 500 pounds when he died. I will not go into the struggle he went because of his weight.

I will not give up on trying to lose this weight, exercising, and trying to be as fit as possible. Let it be God's plan when I die, and not because of my not trying to take care of this body.

Hopefully, this post helps someone stay on a healthy eating and exercise plan.

Sibblings can be so loving and so aggravating at the same time right? I have two brothers and I can say I get along with both, but it hasn't always been like that. As the oldest, I can certainly think back on things done and said by me, that I wish had never happened. I'm sorry to hear about the hard times you had with your brother in the earlier years but very happy you were able to get past those things. My guess is that your brother probably wished he'd never put y'all through all of the aggravation. Try to remember the good times you had with your brother today. I'm sure he'd be proud of you and all of the progress you've made. As usual, I'm your biggest fan Kathy. Have a great day.

Aww so sad, if he had stayed fit and active he might be alive today.

Oh my! I'm so sorry! I think it's wonderful you are using his life as a motivation for your own. At least you know that way it wasn't in vain. I have 3 older sisters, we don't always get along but at the end of the day we will be there for each other.

Hugz. It must be a very difficult day. Thanks for sharing your story and your brother's. When you are young and thin, you never expect to be heavy--that it won't happen to you. I was very skinny and my Dad always warned me that he had an Aunt who got very heavy and passed away--mostly from drinking beer. I don't drink beer, but I do have a glass of wine every night (sometimes two). I have put on over 100 pounds (I was too skinny before) and I'm now struggling to take it off. I don't want health problems because of my weight. I know one of my health problems contributes to my weight (thyroid), so I changed Doctor's and it seems like the medicine is helping to keep that under control. I love your Willpower and insight--never give up, keep on trying. Thank you for sharing.

I'm encouraged by your story and sorry for your loss. I am staying healthy as I can. As the oldest of four, I teased my sibs a little too. We're facing the 60s now and are all close, love the lord. I've Lost 50 lb since i was diagnosed type 2. FS has been a great tracking tool.

We didn't use to know that much about nutrition. Only what the doctor would tell us. Doctors mainly did the "one size fits all" routine. The doctors I used to have said "you should lose weight" and that was it. It was assumed if food was in the grocery store, it was good for you, just eat less. Thanks to the internet and other media resources we can make more informed decisions. So many cases of nutrition related issues were misdiagnosed. We can use the trial and error method with whole foods to see what works for our body by being more informed on the different properties of foods we eat.

Thank you LindaLee14. I am sorry for your loss too. It is so sad when a sibling passes. Not to say you don't miss other members of the family when they pass, it just seems a different kind of sad. Hard to put into words.

Thank you for sharing that story - it is so hard when we watch those we love suffer; especially if there are options for them to heal. Blessings!

Thank you Bopuc. Wonderful that you lost 50 lb! Awesome! I couldn't have come this far without the support of so many people on FS and tracking on FS. Now there are a lot of sites that will help you track but FS has the best member support!

Sorry for the sadness you're feeling. Maybe I can lighten your spirits (I do have a very droll sense of humour) - I'm a 70yr old Scot living in South Africa - been here for 32 yrs. Imagine how I felt when my sister (2 yrs younger) phoned me from Scotland to tell me our last Aunt had just died. Her next comment was: "Mary, you're the oldest one left alive!" If I hadn't laughed, I'd have cried. I'm doing the banting diet and I was looking at what you're eating - the only things you have that I wouldn't is:- soy flour (we don't have any soy at all), turkey bacon (we don't have any processed meats but recommend streaky bacon) and I don't know what eggs you use but we only use free range eggs, preferably pasture fed. Hope you don't mind me telling you my lifestyle but its nice to share our various ideas and methods.

Thanks Mary Charity. I think I mentioned the Banting diet is very close to the Atkins diet here. I don't follow a specific plan, just change what I eat to get results when one strategy no longer works. I don't usually have either soy flour or turkey bacon. But I need to use them up. One tablespoon or two of soy flour at a time :), every now and then, until it is gone. The turkey bacon I had in the freezer for a several months. I bought it at the time thinking it was better nutrition wise than pork bacon that I wanted. Of course, wouldn't you know it...I read later it was lower grade nutrition, highly processed, plus it has so many preservatives. You can get pork without all that, just costs more. I don't throw food away, I use it eventually in small increments. Blame it on the way I was raised. I use Eggland's Best which is vegetarian fed with the extra nutrients. I will get range free when I see them but our local stores generally don't carry them. I do enjoy your comments, PM, and input! Keep it coming! :)
