jmb3450's Journal, 09 Aug 14

Sorry to say I jumped/fell off the wagon last night...nobody pushed me and no particular reason, other than I was alone and could do as I wished. It was a long tough week, I was tired, I'd been good and needed a break, whatever...those are just excuses and I'm responsible for what goes in my mouth. My calorie count for yesterday was way over my RDI with too much carbs and fats. If there's a bright side to it I did resist the temptation to go out and get a tub of ice cream that I wanted badly. Thank goodness I fell asleep early, that put an end to it. So this morning I'm back up to 230, I guess not too bad. Today I'm back in control with just a protein shake for breakfast, maybe one mid-day and then a light dinner. I should be able to get the gain off quickly. Getting ready to go trim some limbs and bushes around the property so that'll burn some calories too.

The squirrels have pushed me past the limit, I've tried to co-exist with them peacefully. There's just no way I can get much out of my garden or peach trees with the current situation. Every decent tomato in the garden has teeth marks in them and get eaten as they begin to ripen. If they'd stick with the cherry tomatoes I could deal with that. There's 3 peaches left on the tree, not ripe yet, because they've gotten all the rest. Repellent sprays don't work, I've tried, I've even tried running out into the yard yelling like a madman and banging on the trees they run up. I wonder what the neighbors think about that. It didn't used to be this bad but starting 3 years ago we've had a population explosion and now the squirrels are everywhere and get into everything. So I just ordered a pellet rifle, scope, and some ammo online. Sorry if that offends anyone but I really have tried. At least I'll eat the ones that are killed so they won't go to waste.

Out now to work and sweat off what I packed into my mouth last night. Hope everyone has a great day.

A couple of ideas... sprinkle dog hair around the garden and trees. Also recently read sprinkling moth balls will keep them away. This applies to beetles, deer and squirrels. I got a handful of peaches last Saturday and by Sunday, the trees were loaded with beetles. So I got at least half a dozen.

"Well Pilgrim, (ok in my best John Wayne's voice) Glad you are back on the wagon! Keep going Pilgrim!~ Keep going!"

Since the loss of our dog a month ago, our yard has begun to attract cats and crows. :( Miss my old girl. No offense taken. You know, if they're good sized squirrels.... Just saying. (No I don't live in the Ozarks.)

Kathy - thanks for the suggestions. I have two small dogs which the squirrels actually tease on the fence so I don't know if dog hair would work, plus these dogs don't shed. But the moth balls are an idea that I haven't tried. If the squirrels are smart they'll take heed, stay out of the garden = stay alive. Hoosier - this pilgrim is back on the wagon, thanks for the support. Bruce - been thinking about you and your dog, wishing you well. A chocolate lab would be a great choice when it's time.

glad you're back on track; & I know how you feel about the squirrels; we have raccoons, geese, ducks, foxes in addition to mice and squirrels . . .. I used to be a nature lover, but it gets annoying in the backyard!

We are glad you are back from your mini indulgence. It happens to the best of us. Just chase down those squirrels and burn off some calories this weekend. Best wishes to a real solution. The squirrels sound like they are wreaking havoc. :(

What's your strategy for next time you are alone and tired at the end of a long week? Try to think about that now to avoid falling off the wagon repeatedly.

Notlivingonramen: That's a great question for me to consider. I knew my binge was coming on, the thoughts were building in my mind during the day, knowing I'd be alone and thinking of allowing myself just a little of this or a little of that. Next thing you know all the little adds up to a lot, I'm sure I ate more than I've remembered and put into my food journal. How to avoid it? Maybe be stronger when I feel the temptation coming on, I don't know, but it is something to think about and plan ahead for, thanks for that.

Jmb3450 get yourself some virgin coconut oil and put a tablespoon in your protein shake, tea and coffee. It is healthy for you and it will ward off some of your cravings too.

Hi there - The important thing is you are up and at it again - only one slip up, that is great! Keep your positive attitude, beating yourself up will only make you want to binge again...I know from experience :-) I absolutely despise squirrels for the same reason as you - they would eat all of our apricots, peaches, and grapes - we have since moved so it's not a problem anymore. The only solution we found that worked was to get netting to drape over the tree then tie it at the base firmly because if there's a way to get in, they will, the pests!!! It also kept the birds from eating them. One funny thing, though, is I think they would shake the small peach tree we had because the peaches would fall off inside the netting. Hope that helps!

So...here I sit on my deck and there's bits of maple keys falling on me. 20 feet directly above me is Mr. Squirrel munching away on them. If I didn't know better I'd swear he is doing it just to piss me off. If I wasn't a penny pincher I'd have spent an extra 20 bucks and got pellet rifle at the store instead of online and he'd be on the menu tonight. Too bad he won't just stick with the maple trees and acorns, we'd get along just fine. There's rabbits hiding out in my beans and they don't eat them, Mr. Squirrel needs to take a lesson from them. On a positive note, I'm watching hummingbirds zoom around the feeder.

Sad that people who have plenty to eat feel they have to kill an animal that is only trying to survive. When's the last time you saw an obese squirrel? Squirrels can be VERY annoying, but why do we always resort to killing? The squirrel has no idea he's taking your food.

Linda, as I said sorry to offend. Perhaps I should have said nothing. There are no natural predators in my neighborhood, in nature things would be in balance. Here they run amuck.

Don't feel bad. Not offended. You need to do what you feel necessary. It was just a general comment. I love animals and it makes me sad when they have to be killed, but at least you WILL use them as food. As you say, without natural predators not much choice.

Another option would be to buy your tomatoes in a store and don't plant squirrel food... I have one neighbor who whined for years how the deer eat her hostas. After the 3rd summer of it, I just said "Stop planting hostas...." This is SO close to "Doc, it hurts when I do this." "Well, don't do that..." Since you get no usable food from the garden if the squirrels are as bad as you say, it's just a waste of your time and energy.

I see some things are better left unsaid and not jested about. One more time, no intent to offend anyone. However I will plant a garden and enjoy the fruits of that labor to the extent it yields and understand there will be some loss to insects/animals. It's when the loss becomes more than it should be that I will intervene, it is my choice to make just as we all make choices.

Love your posts. Don't stop, please, and say what you will. Look at it this way, works great at getting people to communicate. This would be a boring world if we were all the same! Gardens are great to have, especially with the price of everything going up so high, and at least you know what you are putting on your plants and in the ground. Helps the environment, great exercise and takes committment. Sounds like you have a plan to keep the pests away, or on your table. Good for you!

Do the squirrels get a gun too?

Eddie since you wish to push this on my journal entry, a question for you. Do you think that the food you purchase in the grocery store, even if it is labeled organic, gets from the field to your grocery cart without any controls or management regarding pests or potential damage from insects/rodents/critters? That not a living thing that is just trying to survive is harmed throughout the entire process? The difference here is that I'm doing the "dirty work" in trying to control a pest that due to the situation has no natural control, because I am the one growing, harvesting, and bringing the food to my table.

I will make this one last comment and then just say "whatever". What if YOU were the last thing between your neighbor and the last remaining food? Since you are keeping him from food, should he be able to kill you? I do not hunt. I do not like people who hunt. I do not eat meat for a reason. This is a great video for meat eaters to watch, particularly the ones who also say they love animals. sfglobe.com/?id=922&src=share_fb_new_922 And with that, good day, sir.
