Fritzy 22's Journal, 19 Jan 24

It's only 11am and I've been busy so haven't had anything to eat or drink yet except water. I'm waiting on a nice couch for my car to be serviced. Then I'll be done for the day. Saw the orthopedist this morning. Really liked him and how the office was run. Was in and out in about 20 minutes! He examined my knee and told me the X-Ray showed arthritis. Also told me it's fine for me to walk even if it hurts unless the walking makes the pain bad. Said to find a flat place to walk, even if I have to drive someplace. My neighborhood has so many hills but I know where the flat areas are. He also said to go ahead with the MRI next week my primary doctor ordered just in case it is a meniscus tear.

I went to a grocery store near the doctor's office and then since I had time before going to the automotive place I stopped at the little grocery store near my home for Panko bread crumbs, applesauce, taco shells and a small new jar of mayo. I guess tacos are in my future. I have a really hard time swallowing pills and taking them with applesauce helps so I usually log 2 tablespoons most days with certain pills. Crossing my fingers for at least a 1 pound loss when I weigh on Sunday. I've been careful since my lunch at Red Robin Tuesday with a burger, fries and regular coke.

The orthopedist sounds like he listens and it’s good that he still wants you to get the MRI, just to make sure. Congrats on being so good since your Red Robin adventure. My girlfriend treated me for my birthday (last month) and we went to a local seafood restaurant. I went way overboard and will spend the whole weekend trying to make up for it! I haven’t been out for so long I just went crazy!

Thinking good thoughts for your knee!

Thanks Broccolibabe, the orthopedist is literally across the hall from my primary care doctor so he had access to everything about me. My PCP had also mentioned the possibility of the meniscus. When I eat out, it is usually my only meal of the day. So I'm lucky that there is no one else in the house bringing in food to tempted me or expecting regular meals. I also owe my neighbor lunch out because he fixed a piece of furniture for me and wouldn't take any money.. I do love eating out, but don't go often

Thanks Kat! My knee feels so much better now although I walk a little weird. I wonder how important it is to walk only where it's flat..

Couldn’t tell you. All i know is that I prefer uphill to downhill with respect to my knees. Sadly, it’s hard to separate those two requirements most of the time.

How good that you got some clearer answers. Good news about finding flat places. not many of those here either

,Glad you had a good experience at Ortho Dr. If it is arthritis, what is the plan? I have arthritis/ bone surs in my hips. All I can really do is take Ibuprofen when they get overworked. ( when I do lots lower body at gym) I made street tacos last week. Joe really likes them and I either do a taco salad or lettuce cup tacos for me. All good! We went to Carrabba's last night for dinner. Joe has lasagna and I had Tuscon chicken and steamed broccoli. Still stayed on track. Sounds like you are doing same. Have a great weekend, Fritzy!💜

Glad you like the new doctor! We don't have very many level places to walk here either.

Thanks Diana! I didn't really ask him questions I thought of later. Like why would I just wake up one day unable to put weight on the knee for 2 weeks. I think the arthritis isn't a major deal and like you, I just have to learn to live with it. He did say there was a procedure to be torn if it is a torn meniscus and something about if it gets to bone on bone at some point surgery would be needed. But it didn't sound inevitible. I used to make street tacos with flour tortillas then bought crunchy shells once and just love them for now. Haven't made tacos in 5 or 6 months. Your dinner sounds good, both of them! Since I'm so used to not eating after 1 or 2 I just made hot chocolate, including miniature marshmallows. I had 2 Brazil nuts and some raslberries. Probably won't have anything else unless I need an ibuprofen then I may have half a slice of dry toast so I don't take the pill on an empty stomach.

Thanks Morticia! From my house it's pretty level to the corner and I can probably figure out a 20 minute walk that isn't too bad. The doctor did tell me uphill is better than downhill so I can figure out loops in the neighborhood where there would be very little noticeable downhill. There is also a park in my town I could drive to with Bobby. He likes it there

Thanks Liv! There are some flat areas in my neighborhood, but no shoulders where I can park my car. I'll figure it out though

I hope walking doesn't hurt too much and you get better soon!

Thanks Eva! My knee feels so much better but I've only done one short walk in the past week. Will see what happens!

I hope everything works out well for you and it's not a meniscus tear and you don't go thru what I did with it.. I had a meniscus tear and had to have surgery in 2017 and then after surgery I had to walk upstairs to get in my apartment 18steps didn't hurt until I got in my apartment and then the pain started I think the anthesia helped me get up them as my hubby couldn't of helped my8up them I was 374lb at the time but had been immobile for a year and had learned my thyroid was way outta wack enough to where the tsh level was 13 which was almost thyroid cancer level and thank God medicine helped it but I am still on it but the no energy from the hypothyroidism is awful anyway somehow I retore the meniscus at first I would go shopping but still had to use the scooter at walmart and kroger because I had arthritis in the knee also, in 2021 I went back to my surgeon cause the one who did my surgery retired..and he said that I had retorn the meniscus but the arthritis was what he wanted to concentrate on and wanted to do gel shot in my knee but my insurance company wouldn't pay for it so I went back to same facility to see my hubby's surgeon to get a second opinion and he said that I had to loose 50-60lbs before he could do anything I weighed 368. started taking ozempic shot but not eating right or better and still drinking alot mt dew and lost down from 374 to 353 then I started here and have lost down to 296 now but my surgeon was happy for me it had been over a year since I saw him and he did a new xray and it showed up alot of arthritis and bone spurs so he said surgery is what I need and its what I want because I'm almost immobile and don't want to stay like this anymore it's been years fighting the torn and retorn meniscus..my surgeon quit the practice and he referred me to another one I just saw Thurs and he was great he's 53 has had multiple surgery on his own knee.. he advised me that the arthritis is in the end stage of degeneration and I would need a knee replacement full one because one side is pretty much bone on bone not much left in between with bone spurs and the other side has little bit more space in between butbit has bone spur with arthritis in and under the knee cap..I told him about the torn and retorn meniscus which over the years must have healed on its own and he said torn meniscus are bad for causing alot of arthritis in the knee joint ....so I hope you can heal and not go thru what I have went through at thus time 3-4min all I cam walk on my bad knee and he gave me a cortisone shot first to see if it helps if it doesn't he said he knows what he needs to do surgery should be next with full knee replacement I'm so immobile and in pain constantly I'm actually ready for it...

Thanks Naomi! I'm A little stressed about the MRI. Not sure how I will feel stuck in a tube for about 45 minutes. The doctor said my head will be near the opening, and ill be given a headset and to just close my eyes and listen to music.

Thanks Saran, I have very little pain now compared to when it first started. I hope the MRI doesn't show anything. Hope you can get the much needed survery. I had the opposite problem with my thyroid. Hyperthyroidism back around 2000 and then again in 2008. My labs since then have all been normal.
