AJLea's Journal, 12 May 15

Hello everyone, Adam here. Just making introductions and to tell you a bit about me.

I am 46, have been married 25 years and have 3 great kids. I am a programmer by profession.

I lost 100 pounds in 6 months two years ago, but have gained it all back. I am on a journey of "why". Why did I allow myself to gain it back? Why has it proven so hard to get started again? Why, even having lost 100 pounds before, do I tell myself that I can't do it? This is a mental battle, and one I intend to win.

Introduce yourself, would love to get to know you. - Adam

Hi Adam! Why seems to be the question for just about everyone. I went on a three night cruise and gained 8 pounds! Why? Because I let myself. For me fun and food go hand in hand. We need to look at why we're eating. Every time you reach for something to eat ask yourself why you're eating. It really helps. Make sure you write EVERYTHING down that you are eating. Then look back and see in a few days and see where you can change. Hope this helps and remember we're all here for the same reason and and all need the same help and support as you do. Good luck!

Thank you, your comments are appreciated and heartfelt. My answer to why is that I have not changed my mind about food and eating habits. I eat well for a little while, I exercise too for a while but then I got back to the bad behaviors. I have to change my mind about food. Eat to live, not live to eat. Raised with the idea of food as a treat, eat all your food and you get dessert, etc... It is hard to change but it is very doable. We must all change our minds.

I think a lot of us have been where you are, but it really helps to have a support group. I know if I get off track I force myself to log my food, my weight, and a journal entry anyway. Somehow knowing I'm going to do that keeps me on track most of the time. Why? In my case I think food has always been my drug of choice, and it is definitely where I want to go if I'm tired, stressed, nervous, or bored. But I decided food does not have power over me. I have power over food. I'm doing this for me. Good luck, and we'll be right here.

Hi Adam. I Robert and just signed up today on here and like you, mid 40's, lost 80 Lbs in about 9 months 2 years ago.... and gained it all back. I was soo pissed at myself, and kept asking myself "how the hell did you gain it all back??" Guess what...we DID it before and know exactly what to do to lose it.... Today is day 1 and I'm in!!! Ready to be fit again. Tired of having my back hurt from walking down the driveway to pick up the mail because of all the extra weight.. The great news is that we did it once before....and can do it again... Welcome to day 1 bud!

Yes to all of the above comments. You probably got to the point that you thought you could start eating 'normally' again, I know I did. And 'normal' is what got me to the place I am today. For me, 'normal' isn't good. I too work in the IT field as a Network Operator for an Service Provider. I remember the turning points I've had in the past when i was at my lowest(s), it was that I just didn't care anymore. I was looking at dieting and food choices as something that I was doing right then and there and that I would eventually not have to do it anymore. I was wrong. This dieting, this new way of eating is something that I'm going to have to be focused on for the rest of my life to be able to maintain weight loss. There no food that tastes better or is more pleasing then being able to live a healthy life. I've had to break things down to their absolute basics. Food is energy and that is it; I'm tired of having to store it. I haven't really demonized food, but I've put it in it's place. I've removed the my (emotional) perceived value of food and put that into other things. Like not out weighing a ladder, being able to fly in more comfort (I will never forget the day that I don't have to ask for a seat-belt extender!), being able to camp & RV, not having to use a CPAP to sleep, buy off the rack clothes, not have to look around meeting rooms to find the chain without arms, etc.. Progress, not perfection. -FH
