Fritzy 22's Journal, 29 Dec 22

Every new year I make resolutions for things I think I can stick to and goals for other things. The things I focus on are usually financial, and diet and exercise. Also, just changes in my retirement life. Since Covid I have really become lazy, not sure why. Daily lists ensure I at least accomplish something every day, usually household chores.

One thing I really am going to try to do is follow an anti inflammatory diet. After blood work several years ago my doctor explained how I should eat since I had really, really high CRP levels (C Reactive Protein). I don't think this is a test that is routinely done, my doctor did it because of a family history of heart issues. After my doctor explained the diet to me I just did it. Basically he said to avoid processed foods and meats. He even told me what processed meats were - hot dogs, bacon, sausage, salami, etc. I went 2 months without bread, cereal, pasta, frozen meals (mostly Lean Cuisine for me). No soda, no chips. At that time I wasn't drinking coffee but I made hot chocolate every day with skim milk and Ghirardelli hot cocoa mix. I gave that up. I did still have non fat milk every day. Dairy is listed as one of the foods to avoid unless it is low fat. No added sugar on the diet. I think I will have to stop drinking coffee because I just can't drink it black. There are some teas I can drink black. I think it was too drastic a change for me to stick to 100%. This time I will continue to eat the food I have now in the freezer and panty - lots of cans of Campbell's tomato soup. But I need to have mostly fruits, vegetables, nuts, olive oil, beans, seeds. Fatty fish such as tuna and salmon is recommended. I remember mixing a can of tuna with avocado (also recommended) and chopped almonds since mayonaise is not recommended. Crossing my fingers that I can do this. When I lost 50 pounds last time my CRP levels dropped in half, still too high but they dropped and went back up again when I gained the weight back. I know losing weight and walking every day is a big help in reducing the inflammation that the high CRP levels indicate.

We are supposed to have rain and stormy weather today, Friday and Saturday. After what seems like a decade of constant drought I really look forward to rain. My retirement life really seems boring. Yesterday my big activity was going to the local hardware store to get a rain gauge! I also enjoyed wandering around the store - looking at everything. I think we may get 5-8 inches of rain where I live during these 3 days. I hope the rain gauge survives in the little planter on the deck I stuck it into to. The squirrels may pull it out - they can be very destructive if they want to bury the peanuts I put out for them or they think there are sunflower chips in the planter.

Wishing everyone a happy new year and succesful resolutions!

Hope you had an enjoyable Christmas. Your goals seem reasonable. We are working to be healthy I think. Not sure if I have any goals yet. Just the usual I guess. I think I am at a pretty ok spot right now. No agressive squirrels here but the deer pull stuff up or push things around a bit

I’m not sure how I ever found time to work. I do know I got more things done around the house when I worked. Now, house work takes a total backseat to spending time having fun with friends and dealing with sister issues.

Very interesting read. I too have given up a lot of processed foods. Tough at first. I still have low sodium uncured bacon when I can find it. I basically am trying to follow a Mediterranean and MIND diet. Kinda funny though, no matter hwat diet I follow, Ihave to watch darn portion sizes. That's where Fatsecret come sin handy

Thnks Liv - the biggest goal is to follow the anti inflammation diet. I know from past experience that losing weight impacts the CRP levels alot.

Thanks Morticia - it is very similar to the Mediterranean diet. I just don't like fish all that much.

Thanks Maine. I know many people on this site say doctors don't know anything about nutrition but my doctor really does. Or at least he pays attention to it. He has pamphets in the exam room with nutritional information and even his assistants tell me he tells them how important it is to avoid processed foods.

Thanks Kenna - I had to be more organized and manage time when I was working. I also gained 30 pounds the first year I was retired and it just got worse after that.

Thanks Perks - the Mediterranean diet has similarities to the anti inflammatory diet. I think I may have some more choices, or maybe more restrictions. Is uncured bacon not considered a processed meat? I miss deli meat, but I haven't eaten much for several years now. Portion sizes are important. Olive oil and various nuts are really anti inflammatory but really high in calories. So I have an olive oil spritzer I use to keep the amount down and usually have 20 almonds or 2 tablespoons of chopped nuts. Can't have pistachios because I like them too much!

Thanks Kat - I put out my new rain gauge in time for the rain that started yesterday. By the end of the day there was less than 1/2 inch of rain. Now it shows 2 inches. It must have rained alot while I was sleeping and it's been raining all day so far. Really light for awhile and now it's getting windy and the rain is heavier. My gauge only holds 5 inches which would be a good soaking. I think we may get more than that.

I won’t drink my coffee black either and it is the only thing I refuse to change so I have 1 tbs of whatever creamer I want in a cup of coffee!:)☕️☕️😋👍

Navywife, I just started drinking coffee again after over 10 years without it. I don't think I'm addicted to it yet and it shouldn't be hard to just stop drinking it for awhile. I shouldn't have either the half and half or sugar.

Good luck and happy new year. I keep liquid stevia on hand for coffee. It works great for me.
