From371to184's Journal, 05 Aug 18

I have analyzed my situation over the past two days... I think 184 is an unrealistic goal for several reasons: 1) I was never at that weight as an adult; 2) Even at 199 (back in the Army) I was sickly and couldn't function for those three months I reached it; 3) Other than (about) 5-8 lbs of excess skin, I feel/move pretty well (now)... so, how do I (further) quantify a new goal? Suggestions? Jokes? Anything?

If you feel good and you're healthy (BP, glucose, etc), sounds like you've reached your goal!

A rabbi, a priest and an atheist walk into a bar... Just kidding! No suggestions, but i love that you are getting so close to goal! You are so inspiring!! Just don't change your fs name!

Keep in mind that you're still just looking at the overall number of 184. Realistically, that may not be the right number for you. You should be taking into account where you want your body fat percentage to be or your muscle to fat ratio. Its you're simply looking at fat loss without adding muscle, your scale number is certainly going to be different than if you're adding in muscle building. Good work!

I feel like quoting good ole Churchill about the only thing we need to fear is fear itself. Don't let fear dictate your mindset, and don't get ahead of yourself! If you are eating a really healthy diet and your energy levels are good, all things being equal, I think you will do fine. I am so proud of the weight loss you have accomplished. It has been phenomenal. Just take a deep breath and realize you need only live one day at a time.

getting fit is a very good goal. we don't know what the weight will be.

But - but - - now you have to change your name! :) j/k I'm no help on the weight goal. I hit my 'goal weight' then realized that I don't like it (I look like a skinny little boy) and want to be 10 pounds heavier. So, yeah, I'm with your current thinking...

how do you feel where you are at now?

Goals change. Stick with a weight that is healthy and you can maintain. Goodbye old goal...hello new friend!⚖️

I’d start with your other numbers. Meaning, of that weight, how much is muscle mass, how much is fat, how much is bone/water. Revisit your goals from there.

I look forward to shifting from weight number to muscle mass % or body fat %. Or how about an action goal instead of a weight goal - is there something challenging you've wanted to do but it will take something to build up to it - run a marathon, walk a mile, swim something big, climb something tall, do # pushups/pullups, hike x miles of Appalachian Trail...

@BigPoppaKG, yes on both counts; @jengetfit123 - thanks for that! @ehead, I've not thought about BF %age (yet) - a bit scared where I'm at. @CaerinOReilly, I hear ya! @cstella1 - funny! @adefwebserver, nice to know others think the same way. @Vickiauntmick, I feel like my body wants to be at a low weight and my mind hasn't a clue... since you asked (LOL)! @Katsolo - think I'll have to get my numbers quantified by a nutritionist. @VAM45 - I think we're on to something with the "action goal" comment, thanks!

I found I was more interested in lowering my body fat % than an actual weight.

I used my BMI as a factor. I was good at 155 but very borderline so I dropped to 140 to widen the gap. Blood sugars were a consideration for me as I love to binge with Thanksgiving to Christmas being the worst last year for me. I was very happy and felt really good at 173 but my sugars were 300 to 500 with meds.and needed to come down. I asked the sugar doc (endocrinologist) for a better drug and he said I was on the most powerful meds available. I am dropping to 135 now to widen the gap, that is after this week end! Lol. I graduated HS at 215lb and dropped to 140 through illegal drug use and dealing and then married a woman from Satan(not my wife now of 41 yrs this August 19 ❤️❤️❤️) and dropped to 115. I felt good, really good at 115 but climbed back up to almost 200 lb over time. Again I would target ur BMI and be midrange cause if u like me, u love to eat!!!!!

Maybe a non-scale goal, but still log and try not to gain?

If I were in your situation and liked my weight and how I felt, I would start either cardio to burn some extra fat or lifting to gain some muscle. More muscle means a higher calorie burn which means more that I can eat in a day! (I like my treats and would like to get back to a once a week date night and not worry about dropping 1k calories on that meal). Stay wherever you feel comfortable as long as it’s healthy to do so 😉. Oh and I’ve read that muscle will help with the skin issue. I’ve yet to see it but I only have excess skin on my abdomen and an abdominal binder has helped with that. And probably being more hydrated.

If your BMI is in the correct range then just set up a range that will work for you and maintain.....just like that is so easy to do. My MD wants me at 150 and the last time I weighed that was after spending 2 years doing medical missionary work in Haiti, and I was only 24 years old. Then there was no issue of extra skin like now. You have done so well, so don't give up too soon, but stick with something you can live with. A lot depends on your overall health issues and any conditions you're being treated for.

Not sure how tall you are but the low 200s are a pretty good target for most men. I'm built like a linebacker and 6'2" and my best weight was 220 when I was young.

I'd thought about following my BMI... but, even when I was in the best shape of my life (Army, from ages 18-30), I NEVER had a healthy BMI - always (clinically) was "overweight"... so, I'm thinking - after my sleep apnea was resolved, my type 2 diabetes "cured" (per se), and my lower leg edema hasn't returned - maybe the 210s is my homeostasis?

the routine bmi is not correct for everyone. how you feel and your energy level is a better indicator. If you still have a belly at a comfortable weight then exercise building lean muscle may be the last step
