New low today of 194. Wow, so happy! Got past some back-up/prune issues. It's not like I can drink prune juice on my new low carb plan. Haha. I'm taking a supplement called Colon Cleanse that seems to be helping. Some herbal pill that is supposed to help and I think it finally is.

Day 2 on Metformin and waking blood sugar was 113. I know it's only Day 2, but I sort of hoped it would work instantly, like an Advil. However, it would appear that it needs to build up in my system. Is there anyone else who is on it who can say how long it took to be effective for them?

Hitting the gym in the hopes that will lower blood sugar as well.

Whenever I see "New Low" the song by Middle Class Rut starts going through my head. You were stuck just above 200 for so long. I'm excited to see you moving again.

Congrats on the new low!! When I was low carbing (Atkins), I used to make a "muffin in a minute" for breakfast... It has ground flax seed, which really helps to get things moving, if ya know what I mean ;) It's pretty filling and it always satisfied my bread cravings, too! The recipe is on the atkins website or you can google it... It's really simple and quick.

I asked a friend of mine who is currently taking Metformin, she says it takes at least 2 weeks before you will start seeing your blood sugar levels go down, and that yes you do need time for it to build up in your system. Hope that helps.

I've been on Metformin for about 8 months. A fasting blood sugar of 113 sounds good! It took my body a couple months to react to the Metformin

I've been on Metformin for years. At first it was 500mg now it's 1000, but if I stay away from the carbs and lose the pounds I think I'll be able to go back down. Or I'm hoping to get totally off.

Technical Question: Can the adkins diet be dangerous if the formula's are off? I am just asking. A ladys who used to work in my office son who worked at People's Gas lost 57 pounds but then he had liver problems and ended up in the hospital. I knew another lady who lost 77pounds at local laundry mat(Laundry attendant manager) but then had to see a heart doctor. I saw last night on the forum some member had to tweak her diet because she started losing hair. Just asking that's all. I know there are different versions of the adkins diet.

This is why I always tell people before embarking on any diet, go get your blood labs done, so your doctor and you can have that conversation as what is needed to change things that he/she see's as a concern, including what diet that might benefit you too. Because we don't know what type of liver problem he had/has or what started the woman's heart problem and or hair loss, it is hard to answer that question, as they all could have had underlying medical problems before they started Atkins.

I hear you. Thanks for the input. This makes sense. And ofcourse you are correct anyone's underlying medical history does make a difference. When my blood pressure when skyrocket and I had a subhemmorage brain bleed,(2 weeks in hospital) I was 31 and Thin. I have been fine ever since I been on blood pressure pills

Good advice. Also having a good doc is a huge plus..I know my doc has been very supportive of my plan. Not doing anything drastic, keeping track of portions, calories, eating whole foods, giving me ok's on exercise, letting me know to lay off or decrease the exercise here and there due to lung issues. Besides a GP she is also sports medicine, I love her combo of expertise. Also she is a D.O. not an MD so her training is more whole body oriented and very much geared to keeping her patients healthy instead of just treating sickness. I've worked with both MD's and DO's in the past, refer the DO's approach to medicine.

Thanks for all the support. I'm actually seeing my doctor every single month since I started (a year ago). I check in with him, weigh in and show him my food journal. He runs blood tests every 3-5 months, depending on what's going on. Recently with this insulin resistance issue of mine and thyroid borderline numbers, the blood work has been even more frequent. Since I do cardio and had an EKG recently that showed no heart abnormalities, I think I'm okay. The fact is, I believe there are more people out there with health issues who do NOT do Atkins (with a "t", not a "d", in case you Google it). pwrestlephoto, you may not be familiar with my history in that I successfully lost 70 pounds, then suddenly stopped losing weight for no reason. For 3 months! The reason was IR (insulin resistance) as I mentioned above. If you Google "best diet to reverse Insulin Resistance" you will see the first two hits refer to a low Glycemic Index Diet (Atkins is that, as well) and the third hit is a Ketogenic Diet. That's the one I'm really doing. It's high fat, moderate protein and low carb. Read about it so I don't ramble here explaining it. It's very healthy for ME and for MY conditions, but maybe not for everyone. I must drop another 40-50 pounds to be a healthy body weight and I must lower my blood sugar back to 70-99 in the AM to no longer be pre-diabetic. My doctor is also a DO. Thanks to all. I'm not a big fan of pastries, but I will look into the muffin!
