I was doing really well, then after a three day bout of constipation (from which I've since recovered) I'm up 1.5 pounds. You know, this has happened before. I'll go several days without going, then when it finally clears up, it appears that I've gained weight in spite of not having strayed from my plan. It's almost as if the extra time causes the body to squeeze out additional calories.

Of course, that doesn't explain 1.5 pounds worth of additional calories, so who the hell knows. But this is not the first time this has happened.

Another downside is that at the end of day three of this last bout, I was in so much discomfort, I had to skip a big workout night which probably cost me about 600-800 calories of output. That's an expensive miss.

I was planning to simply not weigh in here again until I was down again, but a few friends said, "No, you have to weigh in. You don't want to only weight in when you lose. That's cheating."

At first I resisted, but eventually, I caved in. So there it is. Not discouraged. It is what it is.

I'm sorry to say that I cannot go without prescibed meds from the Doc. I have gone 3 weeks without anything at all so I feel your pain. But before I gt my scipt I would lose up to 5 lbs just from that. That could def. be what caused the gain. ;)

I deal with this all the time. It's so painful and it makes me gain also. It's not my diet that causes it, I've been like this since I was a kid. But I hate laxatives. I've tried softeners and they don't do anything.

Try a rounded teaspoon of psyllium - in just mixes w/ water and seems to do the job with no speedy jaunts to the br

Sorry, Dom. I know you have to deal with this pretty regularly. Sorry you have to deal with the increased weight, but it all seems to settle out eventually. Keep up the consistent great work.

If I might make a suggestion, increase your magnesium via supplementation. If you want something you can add to water, there is Peter Gillham's Calm in flavors such as raspberry lemon. There is also one called Ionic-Fizz by Pure Essence Labs. The importance of magnesium cannot be overstated because of all the biological functions we need it for, and frankly, most people are deficient. If you don't want to do powders to add to water, you can take capsules of magnesium citrate, glycinate or something along those lines. I wouldn't recommend magnesium oxide. The goal is to increase the amount each night before you go to bed until you are happy with your stools. Not only will this relieve constipation, you will benefit from additional magnesium, so if in doubt, do a google on the benefits of it. I do not like psyllium because it binds to nutrients and blocks absorption as do most insoluable fibers, so someone may have to be careful when they use psyllium if they take meds, but magnesium can be taken at night and it will also help you sleep. That is why Peter Gilliam's Calm is called that. Your muscles especially will thank you as well as your bowels.

Don't know. So sorry you are going through this, again. I eat at least a tbs of flax seed a day and usually some whole wheat/ flax seed bread, also usually lots a fiber in veggies, though lately haven't been as good. Crazy schedules and working outside to beat the weather's time clock have messed with my cooking.

Know what I look at??? 71.5 lost. That's what matters. What the hell Dom... you know the routine and that you're doing it by the book. No sweat sweets. Just keep up the good work when you can.

Don't sweat it next week you will be back down and then some. Just stick to it. I have found that by putting the weight number down it motivates me to do better

do you have a gluten allergy?
04 Jun 14 by member: patriciazoey
I used to use cheap ice cream. Not sure if it was a dairy allergy (is there dairy in ice cream any more?) or what it was, but it worked every time. Now at 16% my body just say, "Cool!!! Ice cream!" *shake my head* I only accept my lowest weight of the week when I'm losing (like now, augh) and then I only REALLY accept it if it's below the previous weeks low. You'll make it, Dom. You're as determined as anyone I've ever met. It's frustrating though. When you hit... was it 150??? you'll never look back. You find yourself being a little more pragmatic and trusting of the process. I can't wait until you and I get to trade bulk secrets. We'll get there.

Remember after a bout of constipation you could carry as much as 5lbs of fluid. Give yourself a couple of days to heal.

Have you tried magnesium for constipation? The liquid is disgusting but the magnesium citrate pills are great and aren't harsh at all.

Which liquid did you try? Milk of magnesia? I recommended two brands that don't taste disgusting. It all depends on what you get, and I try not to support companies that make products like milk of magnesia. I like things I can find in reputable health food stores. One powder I recommended is Ionic Fizz, and it has some effervesence. Sugar free raspberry lemonade and has some other minerals and vitamins as well. It's good stuff!

patriciazoey has a point. Something to look into if you don't know.

@HtownMedicineWoman, I bought cherry flavored magnesium citrate from Walmart years ago...it was disgusting. Now I buy Solgar Magnesium Citrate (400 MG ) from the Vitamin Shoppe and the pills are much easier to take. Note on the this subject: if you're taking them for the first time, stay close to home until you know how they'll affect you.

Wow, you guys. What a great bunch of support I got! Thank you all so much! I had no idea how much I was loved here until I read these responses. I'm so grateful for the advice and support. Of course you're right. 71.5 pounds in 10 months is nothing to sneeze at, so II'm not sneezing. LOL. I will try Magnesium which seems to be the order of the day by consensus. Both my parents had these issues, so I consider part of my trouble hereditary. I hardly eat any gluten or dairy. Very little cheese lately, and only after Day #3 when it was already too darned late, haha. At that point, when 72 hours had gone by, some cheese and a nice quesedilla seemed like a good idea at the time. I figured it couldn't hurt. I'm grateful for the remark from Alnona about the 5 pounds of fluid after a bout - I had no idea. I'm willing to believe, it, too. About once a month or so, I go through this nonsense, then I'm good to go for a while. Then something triggers it. This time, I think it was a Codeine I took for a toothache that killed me. One lousy pill and everything ground to a halt. Hard to believe, but I think that's what did me in. I'd been so good about sticking with fruits and veggies and bulk to keep things moving. Codeine. Evil drug. But I was in the fetal position with pain from a toothache. Ironically, 3 days later, I was in the fetal position with pain from constipation. Damn. Sometimes, you just can't win!

Oh, man. Painkillers are almost a guarantee for an intestinal slowdown.
05 Jun 14 by member: northernmusician
