mrsmole's Journal, 31 May 14

Still dropping consistently and got past my original goal of 209 for the month of May, and just short of my revised goal of 206. I'LL TAKE IT!

This means my original goal for the end of June is 201 and my revised goal for end of June is 198. I was trying to shoot for 199 by the 4th of July. Either way, I should make it.

I've been walking the dog briskly for 20 minutes about 5 days out of 7, and I think that, coupled with the gym 3-4X/ week is helping a great deal. More calories on gym days helps, too.

A buddy on here shared with me today that he believes in living life to the fullest when with family and friends, but maintaining a strict intake when home.

I must admit I'm torn on this philosophy. Is it possible to live life to the fullest without overindulging when out with friends?

Let's look at some categories:

1) DRINKING. I don't drink, whether alone or with friends, so I guess that means I will never overindulge in that department

2) EATING WHEN ALREADY FULL. If offered something when I am already full, I cannot see myself accepting it under any circumstances because that is "the old me". The new me says, "I'm full, thanks." I don't see that as not living life, so I won't count that.

3) DESSERTS. This is a category that most people might argue with me, and I'll give you this one. I have completely lost my taste for prepared desserts. It's all about fruit for me now. Every since my diabetes scare last month, I will never eat a prepared dessert, cookie, candy, cake or ice cream again. They scare the heck out of me since the blood tests revealed that I am an insulin resistant pre-diabetic and refined sugar can kill me or put me in a coma. So not worth it, I just lost my taste for any of that. Yikes! Others, I can understand you wanting to indulge at a party of get-together with family, outing, etc.

4) FRIED FOODS. This is a tough one. It would be easy to have the fried shrimp instead of the grilled shrimp on a salad and quadruple the calories. This is still a weakness for me and I can see myself having a difficult time with this when eating out.

5) MY WORST ENEMIES: DRESSINGS, SAUCES, BUTTER!!! Blue cheese dressing on a chef salad that makes for a 2000 calorie lunch! Mashed potatoes and gravy! Stuffing at thanksgiving, and ONLY stuffing at Thanksgiving! About a pound of it! LOL. Movie popcorn with about 14 ounces of that disgusting, delicious, greasy butter that I don't even think is real food, probably motor oil. This is where I'm truly weakest and will have to watch myself for all eternity.

I believe that once I reach my goal, I won't have that hard a time feeling as if I sustain and maintain without feeling deprived.

It's funny that we all have out Achilles' Heel. What's yours?

I can kind of see the point of celebrating with friends if indeed it's a celebration. I over indulge at times (I know you're surprised MM ;) ) but it's when I choose to and normally it's at a birthday or something. Just being 'out' isn't a good enough reason for me to indulge. Living life to the fullests also means living it long if I can. Since there's diabetes in my family, I simply won't give myself the leeway to really mess things up. Sometimes I even wonder about the way that I'm using 'bad' carbs. I think it's time to make an appt to see the doc again and get tested for BS. (That would be blood sugar.)

Okay, that one weekend with the pizza and the hamburger... but I learned my lesson. Hated losing 3 pounds again.

LOL re: BS. At first I was going to say, "You don't need your doctor to test you for THAT, NM!" Hahaha! I'm glad you chimed in. I'm happy enough to say no to cake forever. I really don't miss it. What I do miss is blue cheese and movie popcorn. I know you miss your blueberry yogurt pie!

I have a real fondness for chocolate, and I found the perfect dessert for me when my sweet tooth is screaming. I do not let my sweet tooth succumb very often, but when I really want chocolate, the one I let myself enjoy is very specific. I am pasting the link to the nutritional information. I only allow myself to eat 1 or 2 max and let it melt in my mouth so it slowly dissolves and satisfies my chocolate fix. http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-whole-foods-chocolate-truffles-i307766

I'd love to see it, but the links don't work outside of the original journal poster.

Great! You are almost in ONEderland!

Northern, it's actually on FS. Just look for Central Market organic dark chocolate truffles. There's a lot of fat, I don't mind that, and the sugar is what i consider low enough to eat 1 or 2. There are only 2.6 grams of sugar in each truffle.

You continue to do so well and you are rightfully proud of your progress. Your goal of 199 by July 4th is such an exciting and doable goal. Bet you are going to find a nice way to celebrate making it into ONEderland (as HCB pointed out so aptly). Good job on the self-evaluation as it pertains to living life to the fullest and enjoying being with friends and family. I was only a little less careful while on a trip to visit family recently, so I know I can do this. I still had a great time. Regarding what is my Achilles heel, well, probably just the combination of carbs presented at big family meals, etc. Having to choose between bread or rice or potatoes or dessert. I hear you on the sauces and butter, though. You are fortunate that you made the realization that prepared desserts just aren't that appealing. I still crave them, although sometimes when I give in I find myself not too impressed and stop easily after a couple bites. I'm grateful for that much, but I know I'll always enjoy sweets :-)

You are doing wonderful! Bet you feel a lot better too. I enjoy your posts, you are an inspiration. Just eating healthier does make a difference in body and attitude no matter what a person's philosophy on their particular eating habits.

My Achilles' Heel is potato chips or potato crisps. I switched to baked and restructured potato chips [think Pringles]. The last time I ate them was September 26, 2013. It really is good to log your indulgences. When you finally give something up, you can remember when you gave it up!

You're doing very well, congratulations. As for living life to the fullest when with friends/family I think that is workable, but we each must decide exactly what that means. Maybe it can even mean different things at different times. I like all kinds of foods, you probably can't name something that I don't like, so my Achilles heel would be enjoying food with abandon until I'm just stuffed (although I do love chocolate especially). That's what I used to do at celebrations or get-togethers with family and friends, just eat extra portions of everything, then extra portions of dessert, and continue to pick at it as long as it was out and available. But, this past memorial day was different, had family over and I enjoyed some of most things, but it was in moderation and according to my logs I was still at a calorie deficit. So I'm learning at least. I enjoyed myself, lived life, but didn't go head over heels over the side of the ship.

A sensible cheat meal that you enjoy once a week is good for morale and resetting your metabolism as long as you are working hard and continuing to get results.
