mrsmole's Journal, 05 Mar 14

I've been struggling with weird bouts of hunger lately. Here's an example. This morning, I didn't even want to eat at all, I just wanted a protein shake which fills me up for hours, but I had to go to a business breakfast, so I ate very reasonably. But after a breakfast of eggs, minor fruit and some bacon, I was STARVING. Like, right before you eat Thanksgiving dinner starving.

What is that about? The food woke up an appetite I didn't even have before I started eating. It makes me regret having breakfast at all. It makes me want to call BS to all that (insert whiny voice here) "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" crap I've heard all my life (I know it's important, but it's easy to get pissed off when I'm trying to do what's right and it backfires on me!).

I drank four glasses of water in case I was just thirsty. I wasn't. I came home and just stood in front of the open refrigerator until my fingers got cold. I just had to suffer.

I'm being honest here. This incident makes me wonder if I should throw conventional wisdom out the window and listen to my body and only eat when I'm hungry. How stupid is it to eat when I'm not hungry, only for the eating to then make me hungrier than ever and then after a 700 calorie breakfast, have to suffer for hours afterwards with pangs of hunger? I'm hating life right now because I've eaten more than half my calories for the day and it's only 10:30AM. This is just perfect. Might be time for primal scream therapy!

Have you been exercising in the last 24 hours? I notice that when I do a big exercise my appetite is pretty wicked. The day of, following exercise then the next day. Just noticed the variance in calories last week and how they go up when I exercise or have very active busy days. Don't starve yourself. That's when you'll dive into the nearest Sonic drive thru and get a shake.

I hear ya! Yesterday I wasn't hungry for lunch at all but ate it like a good girl "to keep the metabolism up" or however that is supposed to work. By the time I got home I was ready to inhale anything and everything we had for dinner. I agree sometimes it makes sense to just listen to our bodies. If I'd waited and ate my lunch a little later on when I was hungry, maybe i'd have eaten a more reasonable sized dinner meal...? How knows!

I used to be an "gotta eat breakfast right away after waking" gal, but have completely changed my tune since trying & loving 16:8 IF, which I've been mindfully doing for awhile now. And contrary to popular belief, I feel less hungry not eating usually until 11 or 12. And as you well know (and are probably sick of hearing about!) in the mindful eating way, eating when/because you're hungry is the way to go! Hang in there, my special friend! xoxox

So what can you eat that is really low in calories? Asparagus, broccoli, broth, Brussel sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Grapefruit which I love, but can't eat becuz of my meds, Mushrooms, tomatoes, turnips, Zucchini, spinach, peppers, onions, pumpkin, Radishes, celery, carrots, berries, Lettuce, green beans, celery. Sounds like a great veggie stew or soup. It's probably not what you're hungry for, but I'm trying to help. {{hugs Dom}}....... I went to the library and passed up Jack-in-the-box...... No tacos or Bacon Insider burger... at least not today.......

I'm glad you said that, Breeze. Sometimes conventional wisdom should be tossed. After all, how did I get heavy in the first place? I ate when I "thought" I was hungry! ROFL. Man, why didn't I think of this before! Now I'm eating when I'm "supposed" to eat? To heck with that. Classic, I have to be honest with you, I feel like I'm starving myself now, AFTER I've eaten! I wasn't starving before. I have never been one of those "I'm so hungry, now I'm going on a binge" type of people. I'm the type to just get depressed due to low blood sugar and eventually eat something normal.

Dboza, it's funny that I don't actually crave crap to eat when I'm hungry. I was craving more eggs or some cottage cheese. Not exactly milk shakes and bacon burgers! Sadly, I hate most veggies (especially for breakfast, eww!), and I have had to force myself to learn to love tomatoes and broccoli. That's been a struggle and I'm proud of how far I've come. Most veggies make me bloated and give me gas if I can even choke them down. I know I'm a big baby. :(

My vote: LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!!! [It's the only one we get!] How foolish of us NOT to have great communication between the two! [We are, after all, INTIMATE with ourselves...] so, yes, MINDFUL EATING IS THE ANSWER! Whenever you're eating for reasons other than hunger, it's counter-productive.

Primal scream. That's the ticket. Do at the next business breakfast. I believe the 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day' is bogus, though I do it. I'm usually better with a smaller one, though I've been eating it too big recently. It's slowly getting back where I want it, and with this bulking 'diet', I'm finding out why so many bodybuilders eat 5 or 6 times a day. Eating 3 meals close to 1000 is a little daunting. When I tried Intermittent Fasting, I didn't eat until noon. I found the food I ate after that point was way more satisfying and I felt good for the remainder of the day. IF isn't about what you eat. It's about when. Eat everything (that you're allowed... sheesh) within eight hours. Maybe you should try it?

It happends to me too, if I eat only proteins...my brain thinks that it`s not enough, Carbs make us feel full.

Our bodies are machines, they need fuel. I often find once I eat, I am frequently hungry throughout the day. But, by starting my meals earlier, I am able to get my metabolism up and maintain it throughout the day, this way I am burning more energy all day long. I also don't get as hungry at night when I eat in this way. Eating may beget more eating, but it also burns more calories and our bodies are not in starvation mode. Maybe it's the ratio to what's being eaten also. If I eat a lot of carbs and not enough protein, I'm hungry all day. If I ramp up the protein some and have a few less carbs, I'm much more satisfied. This may also be cyclical. I know on "certain weeks" I am much more hungry than others. Keep up the good work and hang in there.

I have found that happening to myself too. Used to I would just have OJ for breakfast and when I started eating meals for breakfast I couldn't get enough food all day long. It was really weird because I felt once I started eating a big breakfast I couldn't stop and was never satisfied. If I started the day with a small breakfast or something very little like just juice then I found myself eating less throughout the day.

I'm afraid I don't believe in a starvation mode concept unless I've eaten 500 calories for about 6 weeks straight, so starvation mode is a non-issue for me after not eating for 14 hours. Low blood sugar? You bet, and that's a reality. But I don't really have much of a metabolism to begin with. I sit on my ass all day and I do my workouts at night. So if I "kick start" things with breakfast, will I be sitting on my ass with more vigor and enthusiasm? I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but with the work I do (desk work and driving around to people's offices to pick up their broken computers), I just don't see the how a boost would help me. The best non-hunger days for me have been when I start eating later and have my dinner later. But the best weight days have been when I eat my last meal early (5PM) and my weigh ins the next morning always seems amazing. So what's the upshot? Be fuller and pay for it in the morning? Or struggle more at night but have great mornings? Wow, what a choice!

Fundita... interesting. Goes to show how different we all are and what works for us.

I am the same way. I'm not especially hungry early in the morning so if I don't eat breakfast I am fine. But when I do eat breakfast, about 2 hours later I am ravenous.

This exact same thing has been happening to me, except it's at dinner. The past week I have over eaten because I have been starving. It's at the worst possible time because it's not like I have the whole day to "work it off." Like Northernmusician, I have been Intermittent Fasting. I decided that today I would eat breakfast, just to see what happens. (Instead of my usual noon start). Hoping to eat the majority of the calories here in the morning/ afternoon with a light dinner. I guess our metabolisms are all fired up. That could be the only explanation. You could always switch things up for a day or two like me. Let me know what happens. I'm at a loss for this. It would be great to see what happens with you and what works for you.

EAT More protein in the morning to avoid the hunger. AS you said, the protein shake holds over better!

Ditto. They say the food starts the furnace...how do you get the satisfied feeling after the furnace is raging?
