HCB's Journal, 19 Sep 15

Greetings Best Buddies:

I feel much better and more "normal" without the medication I was taking last week. My workouts again are productive, I saw a little movement on the "Idiot Box", and I no longer have the allergic reaction symptoms.

I am tweaking my nutrition plan a little with a slight increase in protein grams (still under 25%) and a slight increase in fiber which equals veggies/carbs - but I am maintaining under 20 NET carbs daily.

I am having some cravings lately - but pushing through them with extra water or green tea.

AND, new words of the week!

Words of the Week:
"Nothing of true greatness comes easily."
I am dedicated, determined and diligent.

Great news -- you're in good company on the cravings . . . I can't seem to fill full today and am flirting with going over RDI. I'm not doing any kind of strict low carb WOE, but making SOME effort to eliminate a good bit of carbage and focus on 'good' carbs (though still need to better educate myself as to what those are) . . . anyway, just curious -- how do you calculate NET carbs?

@ losinit1655 - NET carbs just means you subtract the fiber grams from the total crab grams. For example, if I eat blackberries and the total carbs is 5 grams and the fiber is 2.5 grams - then the net carbs for the berries is 2.5 carbs. You can set the columns on your food diary to show "fiber" and "net carbs" and it will track it for you. SO, although today it appears I have had 29 total grams of carbs, there is close to 14 grams of fiber so my net carb number is still under 20 grams for the day.

Thanks! -- I'm already displaying fiber so I'll try to keep my basic math skills sharp and calculate manually.

Glad to hear you are off the meds and feeling better! I think in the UK carbs on labels are already net. I was looking at something the other day, and it actually contained more fibre than carbs, can't remember what, maybe berries or something.

Just looked at your macros, and I'm surprised you don't have more protein doing the workouts that you do. I'm no expert on this, but I think I'm having more than you, and I don't do anything heavy, only walking and cycling, and some light weights occasionally, and I don't think that I'm eating too much protein either!

@heidij123: I am doing a ketogenic WOE which focuses on high fat, low to moderate protein, and low carbs. My goal is to keep the protein under 25% of total per day, 65% or higher of fats, and 10% or less of carbs. I used to eat high protein (over 100 grams daily) but was not losing weight anymore on that plan. I get all my energy from fats to fuel my workouts because I am keto-adapted now. My body burns fat for energy - including dietary fat and my body fat. I usually eat protein following workouts to nourish muscles.

Glad your feeling better, meds shouldn't make you feel worse.

I have a friend who does ketogenic. He's lost 130 lbs and kept it off for over a year. We each need to do what works for us. Yay for you!

Glad you are feeling better! Those are excellent words of the week!

Hope your tweaking works for you.

Sounds like you've got it. I could never do 20 gr of carbs. I doubt I'll get under 50 when I go on the cut this time, but carbs will be the item restricted to recover some calories. Carbs and some fats, but I'm not as worried about the fats.

I'm glad to hear you're doing better off the meds. The side effects can sometimes be worse than the original issue. Good luck with your diet modifications. I know that having too much protein would knock me out of ketosis. My limit was 80 grams to stay in a deep ketosis. Everybody needs to find their own way.

Yes, we all have to find what works for us; I am inspired by you.

As always - your words of the week are truly appropriate.

@HCB Oh I see! Sounds weird, but hey, whatever suits you! As long as you're getting enough amino acids to repair and build muscles.
20 Sep 15 by member: heidij123
Aminio acids are simply the components that make up a protein. If you are getting enough protein, which most people in America and Europe are eating in excess, you are getting amino acids.

I also take supplements following work outs - I use BCAAs which are branch chain amino acids, glutamine, and protein powder. I am able to build muscle and lose fat...that's the goal!

I love your affirmations, HCB. Always read them.

I was just surprised that you weren't eating more protein! I guess you calculate how much you need for optimum results. I only got into eating more meat because it means I don't get hungry. My stomach won't take much fat at all. It's funny how different we all are!
