Fritzy 22's Journal, 09 Feb 23

I had 2 bad days of eating toast! First time I've had butter since the 1st of January. I bought some dark rye bread and I love it toasted, almost to the point it burns with lots of butter. Yesterday I had 2 slices for breakfast and 2 slices for lunch. Same thing the day before. I put the remaining loaf of bread in the freezer in the garage but wouldn't be surprised if I just finish it off pretty soon.

I texted a friend about getting together for lunch or for a walk. We had talked about meeting for lunch after the holidays. She lives in my neighborhood, probably 1 1/2 miles away. She wanted to walk and drove to my house. We walked with Bobby on a dirt trail that goes by a creek. I got lost on the trail and we ended up walking for an hour and a half. Not many hills but some up slopes on the dirt trail. I'm sure it was over 3 miles, maybe 3.5 miles. We both felt great about the walk, although she is in better shape than me and the hills would be fine for her. I struggle with any hill. When I got home I literally couldn't move and everything hurt - my back, my ankles and feet, hips and thighs. I was surprised that I had to hobble around - I always thought walking loosened my muscles. I tried ice on my back but it's just too cold for ice so I switched to a heating pad, took prescription strength Ibuprofin and I was fine in an hour. I did over 15,000 steps yesterday! That is by far the most I have done since getting the step counter. Maybe that's why it hurt so much. We are going to walk again next Wednesday and I told my friend to let me know anytime she wants to walk. She is dealing with her husband's medical issues and has lots of appointments because of that so we can't just walk every day.

I am going to take Bobby on a walk today, maybe the same one as yesterday but it won't be as long since I now know where I got lost. Last week I walked him on the trail behind my sister's house. There was water in the creek (which is very rare) and I slipped in the mud trying to cross the creek. I fell on the most padded part of my body and had to walk the 20 minutes home covered in mud. I have to be more careful because it is so easy to get hurt.

Not sure what I am eating today. I may just have a can of soup and my usual snacks and breakfast to try to get enough protein. Trying to ignore the rye bread in the garage freezer! I really want to meet my goal of losing one pound a week and have until Sunday morning. So far I am down .4 pound.

I was eating a half of a piece of rye bread for months and it didn't work out well for me. Starting gaining weight. Sounds like a great place to walk there.

Thanks Morticia. I know I just have to give up bread, but I bought the loaf of rye and then couldn't resist it. I keep telling myself I can have a little bread once I reach maintenance but will never get there if I keep having bread! I just got back from doing the same walk as yesterday. It was about 2000 steps shorter because I knew where I got lost yesterday. Still it was nearly an hour (58 minutes) and about 6200 steps. I don't often walk on the dirt trails, but they are pretty.

Wow, impressive step counts over the past two days. Swedish researchers have found that rye bread suppresses the appetite by 16% & this appetite suppression lasts into the afternoon. Rye bread is a healthier bread than plain white bread so don't be so down on yourself, Fritzy. Enjoy the bread & start over tomorrow.

The Fritzy, there is a free app called WALK sponsored by HURLY that tracks your route. If you become lost or just miss your fork in the road you can just retrace your steps. It also tell mileage and pace, etc. I always hit the start button when I am hiking or even just walking in new neighborhoods— especially when I hike alone like I do sometimes. It has gotten me back to my car even in large parking lots like malls and football games. Comes in handy.

You don't have to give up bread, and it sounds like that wouldn't be happy or sustainable for you. I've maintained a healthy weight consistently eating more carbs and less protein than I'm "supposed" to, and I bet you can too! No carb is just a fad like no fat was in the 80s. Find what works for you. 🙂

Thanks Koko! I've always loved rye bread. I will probably wait until Sunday after I weigh myself and see if my 1 pound weekly goal is met. Then I may have some toast again!

Thanks Kenna! The app sounds great and ill get it added to my phone. Would love to know the mileage and pace of my walks as well. A few years ago I got it my car to measure all the distances of various routes I walked in my neighborhood but have no idea where to find the scraps of paper now

Thanks Dolly! I actually need to avoid bread and butter and processed food as much as possible. I am not on a low carb diet! Would never follow a diet like that. I follow an anti inflammatory diet. Although I am not following it as closely as I should. Once my weight goes down and the lab results show inflammation in a normal range will add a little bread back in my diet. Right now the lab results show inflammation way too high. Congrats on maintaining your weight!.

Carbs are ok in moderation. You don’t have to completely cut them out. There are good carbs as well look into those.

Thanks Shir! I only buy the dark rye bread about 2 times a year. Once I finish the loaf the temptation is,gone.

Thanks Mrajbansie, I am not on a !ow carb diet! Everyone assumes that i am because I talk about not having bread. I get lots of carbs from fruits, fat free milk and other foods. I!owe weight faster when I remove bread, cereal and pasta from my diet as much as possible. I try to follow the anti inflammatory diet which eliminates processed foods and processed meats from the diet. I can't do it 100%, it's just too hard but I try.
