Fritzy 22's Journal, 03 Feb 22

I hope to eat well today. But I've already had a cup of hot chocolate and an English muffin for breakfast. Hope to stir fry some veggies later. Went for a little longer walk today. Still not able to go all the way up the hill, just another 2 houses and I'll be there. Once I can do that there is a nice loop I can finish up with that makes the walk twice as long and it's mostly level. Had another physical therapy appointment Monday. Something is making my right leg/glute/calf hurt more. Maybe one of the stretches. My right leg seems weak. Hard to go up stairs, the left leg is fine but the right is giving me problems. Hopefully the physical therapy will hurt. Keep hearing about pinched nerves or herniated discs. I think this is how I am aging.

Well, I hope they can help you heal it up. For me the day goes better if I start off with protein. If I start with carbs, that sets me up for cravings all day. Try it, maybe it will work for you too.

Thanks Erika - I've heard that it's a good idea to get lots of protein for breakfast. I heard somewhere to get 30 grams of protein for breakfast. I don't get enough protein most days. My doctor wants me to eat as little processed food as possible and that includes processed meats. I haven't been able to do what he wants except for the processed meats. So breakfast meats, like bacon and sausage are off limits. Sometimes I'll scramble 1 or 2 eggs. If I make hot chocolate or drink a glass of fat free milk that gives me 8-12 grams of protein. Sometimes I'll have raw almonds, but they are high in calories so I have 12-20 for about 3-4 grams of protein. I can't eat eggs every day. So it's tough. Today I had coffee and an English muffin - so minimal protein there. Oh, the doctor also says no protein powders, etc as that is also "processed" food.

Fritzy. If you buy the bacon or sausage that is 'uncured' you'll be getting meat that is unprocessed and therefor out of the category of processed foods. It doesn't have the nitrates or nitrites that are in more processed meats. This goes for deli meats too.

Thanks Liv. In the olden days (when I was a kid) the doctors prescribed bed rest for back injuries. I remember my mom spending weeks in bed when she hurt her back. Now they want you to move. But if you stretch too much or the wrong way you can hurt yourself more. I do the stretches that are easy, otherwise I am resting in bed with a heated blanket under the sore leg. Erika - I don't follow my doctor's instructions 100%, or even 50% most of the time. I had a frozen pepperoni pizza for lunch (after cooking it). But it's really better for me to avoid bacon or sausage and pepperoni, salami, etc. Haven't seen "uncured" bacon. Today I had string cheese and almonds with my breakfast and later a 12 oz glass of fat free milk to get some morning protein.

I had pepperoni too - it is that kind of week!

I wish you well with your sore leg and back, Fritzy!

Abba - there were maybe 5 slices of pepperoni on the pizza. But it was over 700 calories for the "pizza for one". I still stayed within my calorie allowance! Erika - thank you. I really think the rest helps me more than too much moving around. Although I did set my kitchen timer for 4 15 minute sessions of just moving around. Changed the sheets on the bed, put a load of laundry in the washer, and spent about 40 minutes of that time tracking down a lost sock! Drives me crazy when I find one sock on the floor to put in the laundry. Finally found it under a heating pad that my cat was laying on.

Fritzy, thanks for the timer reminder. My house house has gone to hell in a handbag while I've had Covid. I was doing really well using your timer method before I got sick, so I think I'll use it during my recuperation. Starting right now with 15 min at a time, and work my way up. Thanks!

15 minutes at a time really works for me. I am so much more comfortable laying in bed with a heated blanket under my back and leg. Getting up every hour for at least 15 will make my physical therapist happy.

It does seem to be important to get up and move when you're trying to heal. I got out to walk my dogs for the first time in 3 days. It was so good to get out and move. It was sunny and 22 degrees, so not too bad.

Erika- my plan was to start walking every day and keep going further. But I haven't walked in about 4 days. Today's excuse is it's garbage day and I hate walking in the neighborhood when they are all over the place, plus they scare Bobby. Maybe tomorrow.............
