Kenna Morton's Journal, 25 Aug 21

A friend who lives back East called me today. She went to urgent care with severe back and neck pain and walked away with a diagnosis of multiple neck and spine tumors. She is in severe pain. They wanted to admit her for biopsy but there were no beds so they sent her home with big time narcotics. Her BIG hospital has almost nothing but Unvaccinated Covid patients. She said the MRI tech told her that 70 nurses turned in their resignation today. No longer going to put their lives on the line. I thought it might be on the news but didn’t see anything. This is just the beginning.

Just get vaccinated!

Moderna just received full approval from the FDA. No excuses not to get vaccinated. It’s proven to work.

So very sorry to hear about your friend. I hope that she is able to get to a hospital where it is safe and she will get the care she needs.

The vax should be left up to individual choice, not mandatory.

Tntmorris87– I hope you and your family are never affected by these personal choice decisions made by others.

Things here in Nevada are really bad! It's been all over news...lots of hospital workers are quitting.

ApacheTiger37..."PROVEN" to work?! On what planet is that the case? Here on earth there have been thousands of deaths and even more instances of severe side-effects. It should be up to each individual, after weighing the pro's and cons, whether or not to receive the jabs. For some people it may be appropriate, no question, but individual freedom/choice should NOT be sacrificed!

So sorry to hear about your friend. I hope she can find a facility that has room for her soon.

I’m so sorry about your friend’s diagnosis and suffering. Glad you were there to listen when she needed support. As you pointed out, non-covid patients, especially oncology patients, are gravely affected by the pandemic. They have been referred to visiting nurses in their home setting with home IV therapy and “telehealth.” I witness that telehealth indirectly results in untimely deaths (long story). We visiting nurses took paycuts while our travel radius grew insanely. Accessing PPEs is difficult. Some of my favorite nurses resigned, they were excellent nurses. Media only care to show stories that are photogenic and gratifying instantly. I am very angry. I’m not resigning yet but reduced my workload.

sorry about your friend. Ya, I'm not in the military, but to me it feels like fighting a never ending battle. This is never going to end I can tell you that. Every where you turn people don't wear masks, but come crying to us ,because they don't feel good or they're dying because they now have COVID. I understand everyone is tired of it all. I am to. I'm tired of wearing a mask and it's hard wearing a mask at the gym working out, but I do it, because I don't want COVID. I've seen what it does to people young and old healthy and unhealthy. It's like playing rush n roulette. You don't know how it's going to affect you. Young healthy people are even dying from this

Without herd immunity this virus will be with us. Science has suspected all along that it would be possible to still give and get the virus. People forget or never learned from the beginning that for now the goal of the vaccine is to PREVENT DEATH and long hauler syndrome. As long as there are hosts, the virus will rage. This is a work in progress for years to come. I know a handful of long haulers who wished they would have died including my own sister. Personal choice folks. Many people here have so many comorbidities that make them at greater risk.

Kenna is right. This is a work in progress. People these days want an instant solution, like swiping an app, and complain that we are not quick enough to resolve the pandemic, while they continue to benefit from our effort to contain the spread. I’m angry and exhausted from trying to protect my patients with complex comorbidities.

I heard on the news that a company (maybe Delta?) is going to charge unvaccinated people an extra $200 a month for their health insurance because it costs so much if they end up hospitalized. I had been thinking health insurance may be a way to get more people vaccinated. I know I would hate to pay extra for insurance.

Fritzy, It costs an average of $50,000. to treat a Covid patient in the hospital. That is going to raise everybody's insurance costs, because you know that the insurance companies are not going to just absorb the loss. 99% of Covid ICU patients are unvaccinated, so they could have prevented their hospitalization if they had gotten vaccinated. I don't get why anyone would take that risk. In the meantime, I'm feeling fortunate that I'm retired, so that I can keep myself (with my comorbidities) safe at home. As far as health insurance helping to get more people vaccinated - the vaccine is free to everyone, so cost is not a factor. - Except when it sends everyone's insurance cost up.
