erikahollister's Journal, 25 Aug 21

I'm working on a long term project. I'm planting an all native-plant pollinator garden along the roadside at my property. It's almost 300' long and ranges from 10-30' wide. It will have bushes, trees and lots of wildflowers and grasses. Here is a picture of me planting plugs that I purchased from a native plants nursery in my area. The plugs were mostly grasses and echinacea and bee balm. I killed down the weedy turf with black plastic that stayed on most of the summer. The paper shown here, goes under the mulch to block light that might allow weeds to germinate. I'm a Master Gardener and this is a multi year project. I'll try to post some pictures of some of the more established plants. Most of my exercise comes from crawling up and down the slope, hauling mulch, soil and water and lots of squatting and standing. My home and yard are in the greenway of the Connecticut River with thousands of migrating birds passing through, so I figure it's important to feed the insects and birds in a world where they're losing so much habitat. It's important for gardeners these days to plant native plants, because the insects need them to reproduce. They just don't do as well with plants that have been imported from some other part of the world.

That's very nice of you, I'm sure it'll turn out beautiful. Milkweed for the monarchs?

Outstanding! So much better than pumping iron. Better for your body and the planet!

@Eral66, But of course! I don't need to plant it though, it's so common here that I just need to not weed it out. I am planting some more unusual varieties, though. And I've had a lot of them in my garden this year, including some chrysalis.

This is so awesome, and I look forward to seeing your progress! I have a little community garden plot, and it is so good to just be interacting with the natural world in this way. This exercise feels extra good for the soul to me! <3

Yes indeed. I call it vitamin G (for gardening). I always feel better when I've been in the garden!

Thanks Rguarino, I really do have lots of it just growing in my yard. The site is amazing though. It's worth going to and reading up. The plight of the monarchs and all other insects is truly alarming!

One of my favorites is Queen Anne’s Lace … I live in Brockton MA. I see it continually on my neighborhood walks. Actually think I see it in the background. Special project you’ve got going there.
