Barb, I am an “elder” as well but I don’t have the luxury of staying home. I certainly follow all of the guidelines that are recommended in order to be as safe as possible.

I initially started off with the regular hospital paper masks because I had them at home. I soon realized that this mask wearing was going to be necessary for a very long time and the cost of the paper masks is ridiculous if they were to be worn and disposed of as they are suppose to be for safety purposes. When many people order over the internet they don’t really understand what they are buying. Many of these paper masks are really dust masks and meant to keep things like sawdust from getting into your nose and mouth. ultimately I make my own with one of the patterns that you find on the internet. I ended up buying legitimate N95 masks for high risk scenarios but they are not perfect either because they are not fit tested for size and leaks and they can make it hard to breathe when worn for a long time. I have just simple ones for when I hike and there is no issue being able to maintain distance. For when I have to go to Walmart I make one out of a bandana and a couple of hair ties and that works real well and is washable and cheap to do. Just remember that the purpose of the mask is not so much to protect YOU, It is to protect others FROM YOU. That is why it is so important for all of us to wear one for closer contact scenarios — to protect each other. Even for a routine surgery, we do not wear masks to protect ourselves, we wear them to help protect the patient should we cough, sneeze or spew droplets even just talking that might wind up in the patient’s surgical wound and cause infection. When the patient is infected we wear N95s that are fit tested to each one of us individually and we each had our own supply. Just be as safe as you can be.remember though that your mental health is extremely important as well.

I have the exact one in your picture. Bought a box of 50 and used one today. 50 should last a long time. Our governor has made wearing masks in public mandatory. I went to the paint store today and everyone had a mask except for one older man who was there with a little boy. I felt like going outside until they left. There was a sign on the door saying you have to wear masks but some people just don't care.

Fritzy— 50 will last 50 days. You have to remember that you are breathing into them, your spittle is on them, if you have a runny nose when you wear a mask, that fluid dries on them they can grow bacteria and molds. One day max. That’s why I prefer washable. Yesterday Ihad to go out 3 times. I used a clean mask or bandana each time.

Kenna - I just wore the 2nd one today and threw it out. I figure the box will last me 3 or 4 months. I don't go out often. About every week or two to the grocery store and every 3 weeks to the vet. I have a washable mask but it has ties. I like the ones that I can hook on my ears.
