Day 51
OMG What a party! 65 people showed up to celebrate my 10/10/10 birthday. Even though it was only 3 hours, that party has lit up a happy section of my brain! No turning back.
I don't have pictures yet, but I will. Fittingly, in my closet I discovered a pink sequined blouse decorated with a giant butterfly, which I never wore for anything else, and I paired that with a black skirt - the big dress did not really seem like the right choice!
The band showed up early and set up. The caterer showed up early and set up. The bartender and the hall janitor showed up early and set up. The only person who did not show was my friend Bridget who was going to help with the centerpieces but I did that myself and it didn't take long - 2 flamingos per plant and the caterer and bartender helped me spread them around.
I had a table of appetizers: sushi, shrimp cocktail, hummus and pita, veggies and dip. Asparagus spears wrapped with roast beef.
A table of sandwiches in mini croissants: tuna salad, chicken salad, and ham salad. Meatballs in sauce, fried ravioli in sauce. A cheese board with artisan cheeses (brie, bleu, gorgonzola, and goat cheese I think). One table had the cake and mini pastries, petit fours, brownies and other bars, and a fruit platter.
I was so busy getting hugged hello that I didn't get to overeat! Cash bar so nobody got seriously snockered except one gal who bought herself two martinis, and the bartender was very heavy handed with the liquor I must say - one glass of wine she gave me was filled so much I couldn't lift it without spilling it!
The band played 50's and 60's music: Run Around Sue, Roll over Beethoven, Imagine, Beach Boys, etc - my posse danced all night! I have 8 or 10 friends I hang with all the time and they were so excited when I introduced them to my coworker as "My Posse" that they have all posted thanks on their facebook pages! lol! Seemed a lot easier than trying to introduce them all when all they wanted to do was dance!
A bunch of my relatives came, the old friends of my dad's, my crazy stepmom behaved herself, and everyone loved the party!
What a ton of presents I got too - not too many gift certificates after all, but a really great collection of thoughtful things: scarves, pictures, prints, books, cards with loving notes, flowers, but not one bit of candy! I brought an album of me that showed me from birth to age 18 - my aunt gave it to me for Xmas one year so it was a nice short album that everyone loved looking through.
Honestly, I dragged myself through the preparations Sunday, picking up the cake and pastries, straightening out the credit card snafu, ordering more soda. Maybe I thought the party was going to flop? But it really was great - the band was great - my friends just danced the whole time - my family was so proud of me - Everybody ate!
I feel like a cloud of love has descended on me and I will be intoxicated with self-esteem for a long while because of this party. Maybe I'll do it again next year - everybody offered to do it potluck and pitch in for the band so it could happen!
