Kenna Morton's Journal, 13 Feb 20

I sometimes have to laugh at the things that people think they know and know so little actual, factual information about. Genetically modified foods is one of those issue. I would hazard to guess that there are very few edible items that are routinely eaten in today’s world that exist in their present form as they were in the ancient world. Carrots were NEVER orange until about the 13th century. corn didn’t exist— it was a grass. Even in more modern times it was not an edible product, it was coarse, rough and used only to feed the animals until someone crossbred it into an substance that could be eaten by humans. Almost all produce seeds are modified to be grown faster, bigger, to be pest resistant, heat tolerant and require less water. How many different kinds of apples originally existed— not the hundreds that are available today. How do you think we have been able to keep up with the food requirements of a country with a growing population. But I guess there are people who would like to return to “back in the day” when food was “pure” and many peoples were starving. That is still happening all over the world. But these same people think nothing of cross breeding poor cats and dogs into ridiculous looking creatures that some can’t even deliver their own offspring naturally. Don’t get me wrong— I’m not a major Monsanto supporter by any means but we need to look at the world we live in with a realistic perspective. Just sayin—-

Hubby works for a Monsanto competitor. He’s had to explain to me why the modifications are necessary. As you said, we have a huge population to feed.

GMOs are great.

Evolution is a GMO if you're at the very top of the food chain.

In my opinion GMO and cross pollination or selective breeding are miles apart. Food are trade marked now as totally foreign material can be introduced into products so you can make glowing pigs or something. There is still much to learn about what happens when we do it. I am not against it on principle but I hope we are not moving too fast with this.

I teach about GMO's in my college classes, you would be surprised how many foods in the USA contain them, almost all, my problem is the chemicals they add to stay on grocery shelves that can stay for 2 years . Most other countries have banned them, Our current FDA Director is a former Monsanto employee which is now called Bayer, yes the aspirin people, also one of our Supreme court justices is on the Monsanto payroll as a consultant Clarence Thomas, and life goes on, if we keep eating them, they will keep making them ..

DO N OK is spot on with his comment of if we keep eating them they will keep making them. Same with everything. Don't want a speeding ticket? Don't speed. Don't like the takeover from big pharma/agri/corp ? Don't hand them your money. Sure, the alternatives cost more at point of sale and it is too easy not to look beyond that point. We have to dig deep and be prepared to go without to make the change real. Unfortunately that is not, for most, the human condition, and those who want to will take full advantage as long as they can.

as a person in my 70’s I remember not having ready access to fresh foods in such variety in the winter months especially. So much produce in its unaltered state could not be transported great distances because it wouldn’t survive the cold/heat. Bread shortages when there were massive weather changes or pest infestations that killed the wheat crops. Chemicals and selective breeding of our food sources have essentially removed most of that issue. Younger people do not know what they do not know. Those were the “good old days” — strawberries, blueberries, oranges, tomatoes in Minnesota in December? Probably not unless your mom knew how to can food or you had a big freezer. But FRESH? Not happening.

Kenna, yes! My gran is 85 and went through hard times/war/famine. Her perception is so different from ours. She says the same. I admire her, she is a former village doctor, something that does not exist anymore (it required a 4y degree back then, now it's an "upgraded" nurse, kind of?).
