WARNING...more shamless biker bragging...

A few days ago (the 8th) I took a 2nd place on a very competitive,18.8km (11.7 mile) Strava segment over here in Kailua Kona.

This came on the tail end of a long climbing ride totaling 111.5km and 1503m climbed. That was a lot of fun, I actually reached around and patted myself on the back...lol.

I have been riding everyday since we got to Kailua Kona on the 4th.

Longest ride so far was on the 6th where I rode the Ironman route from Kona up to Hawi and back, 183kms, 1352m climbed over 6 hours...that was a "drain the tank" kind of day for sure...lots of calories and glycogen burned that day!!

Now I know that this kind of stuff isn't for everyone but I also want to mention that it was only a couple of years ago (fall, 2017) that I thought 20 miles was a LONG ride...now that 20 miles is like taking a short walk...

Wow- That's awesome! Good for you! You deserve a pat on the back! That is a lot of miles and must feel great to see how much you've increased your stamina.

85.7km/h... you need a good stiff bike to do that kind of speed. Mine get wobbly over 60. Amazing ride from many angels. Congrats on your great results. I'm quite comfortable with being a year or two behind you. Building a solid lifestyle change take some time.

Thanks DP, it's just a little funny how much easier it has gotten and how my perception has changed in such a short time. While.endurance is up, my speed and sustained power has significantly increased too. These Strava segments are really little races within a ride; with hill climbs, sprints and time trial sections timed against all other riders, brings out the competitiveness in some of us...

Thanks MC...sounds like your moving day was like a free day at the gym...nice!!

Ya Diddlee, we have two hybrids over here and I never felt comfortable taking a descent at over 60 kph too . Got the 2016 Tarmac Expert last fall (used, but good shape)...it's super solid, stiff, and racy. If you end up going with a bike trainer/zwift combo, I'll send you some good base info to check out on periodized training.

Steven Lloyd. I suspect you may suffer from TooMuchFuniatis, and should get it checked by a Specialized 😜 Typical symptom is that you tend to smile more than normal, and may break out in what may be seen as inappropriate laughter. Thanks for tips. Good goals to keep in mind.

Oh my goodness!!!! That is crazy amazing! It must feel terrific to know of what you are capable. What a lot of hard work you have put in to reach this level of fitness. I'm really glad you shared, because it pushes all of us to think we can surely do better... And to try to reach more of our potential.

Thank you Melissa...I must admit though that it doesn't feel like work, I've been lucky to have found a few activities over the years that are fun, I LOVE to do, burn calories, maintain muscle mass and help maintain my health and fitness. Also, for the record...I for sure do not exercise to eat more but often the opposite...I have to plan my endurance and recovery fueling to maintain energy and muscle mass for my higher activity days. However, I still monitor input very carefully as it is always way easier to put more calories into the body than exercise or other activities can take out.

It might not "feel like work," but for most of us we would not be capable of what you do! 😁 That you are both meeting the challenge and enjoying the journey is just inspiring! I'm planning a 25 mile single day walk. I will enjoy that! Sometimes it rolls around in my head thay I can eat some more on days I expend a lot of energy, but I don't routinely add in calories... Just if I am feeling depleted. Walking, regardless on how fast, isn't really a muscle building activity!

Nice challenge Melissa!! For me, my challenge was a two day, 240km cancer charity bike ride...lost my mom and two good friends in the same year...now I'm in it for as long as I can physically do it...#worthy-cause.

That a awesome accomplishment Steven!!! It's also proof that even us seniors can still improve our stamina and fitness...

Yup John...it is possible to improve a bit with proper training, a bit of effort and an investment of time. I did get lucky a long time ago and found a few things that were both fun and pretty active, biking at a higher level is still fairly new to me, so still pretty motivating...the fitness ties right into my skiing, so a big win there too.
