Kenna Morton's Journal, 14 Sep 19

IF is just a fancy term for what many people do on a daily basis. You have breakfast— six to eight hours later you eat lunch, six to eight hours later you have dinner and that’s it until breakfast about 8-10 hour after that. It is the incessant snacking that is a big problem.

Thank you! My thoughts exactly! If you eat big and listen to when you are naturally hungry again...ypu will autimatically IF. No planning needed.

Kenna- I agree. For the past two years I have been a 3 meal a day advocate with an occasional fruit afternoon snack at work. I fasted from 6 pm till 6 am not even thinking that was a fast. About two weeeks ago tried to skip the morning meal to restart my weight loss and do 18:6. Big fail.....I was so ravenous and snacking late morning , afternoon and evenings. I actually gained weight. So back to three squares for me. Extended periods of not eating works for some people but not something I could do on my journey. Great post!

The only way I can do IF (was 16:8, now OMAD) is to stick to my low-carb regimen. Since I dropped my carbs to <20g total/day, I have neither hunger pangs nor cravings.

Frequent feeding keeps serum insulin levels elevated, and that helps store fat. I've been able to skip breakfast, and sometimes lunch, too, without a problem.

There is also a psychological component for me, 'eating when not hungry'. So a 'IF regimen' helps control that. I mean seriously, why should I *ever* eat when I am not hungry? Ok, back in the day humans did not know where their next meal is coming from, but, I have a refrigerator FULL of food...

I am totally in agreement with you, Kenna.

Adef...agree...that is what Kenna is saying...it is the snacking that is the issue! For me, I am actually breaking the habit of 3 meals a day. Some meals are heavier than others and so I eat out of habit...bit now, I eat when hungry. I try to keep my fridge stocked with only what is needed now. Not quite there yet..but I reduced my grocery budget so I can focus on not only saving money but not having more than necessary.

That's not IF. IF means you Eat during a certain window.

Summer...IF is fancy term for fasting in general. I.e. not eating for a defined window...which can be until I am hungry.

I think if it is not at least 16 hours of fasting it is not IF. But yes snacking is a problem. I sure is my problem, but regulating it now partly using IF which has been a great tool for me to ensure good stable meals rather than grazing

I eat breakfast about 4 am every morning. Swim for 2 hours and eat lunch between 11/12. Run errands, shop, clean house (a little) cook, walk or hike or go to school, eat dinner about 6. If I have a dessert it will usually be reasonably soon after dinner, so I’m done with food by 7pm. By the time each meal comes around, I am HUNGRY. I would love to eat my big meal of the day at about 2pm but that would never work in my lifestyle. I don’t eat when I am not hungry but I don’t snack so IM happy when mealtime comes around

its the benefits of extended fasts burning stores fat instead of getting energy from recently eaten food that most Intermittent fasters want to achieve. 🤷‍♀️ but sure, we all fast to a degree.

16 /8 is one method of fasting.

While I know late eating is not recommended, I tend to be hungrier later in the day. If I eat dinner too early, I find myself looking for a snack in the middle of the night, so I often don't eat breakfast until 10 or 11, lunch at 2 or 3 and dinner at 8 or 9. If I am going to miss a meal, it will be breakfast but I've never considered that fasting. Fasting, to me, is intentional, a sacrifice, like during Lent or Ramadan.

eating as I do helps me ensure that I am providing my body with the nutrients that it needs to work efficiently for me. I could not eat enough food in one meal to supply a whole day’s worth of essential vitamins, minerals and other micro nutrients that many people don’t even realize exist. I NEVER OVEREAT. I can’t stand to be bloated full, I would puke.

Breakfast literally means break the fast

Eat when you're hungry, but know that hungry and wanting to eat are different tigers.

As long as I get DASH servings in per day...I consider I am getting my nutrients. Although I need to do better with that. There I only eat dinner....cause I get preoccupied and seriously not hungry. That is when I make dinner and may have 2nds or 3rds. But don't exceed DASH recommended servings in a day.

Eat when you are hungry is tricky... I get hungry looking at food, smelling food, watching people eat, watching food show on TV... I need to use tools and my brain a lot.
