"It's 2019 and people still think carbs make you fat. It's still not true.

Part of this myth stems from the fact that people sometimes spontaneously lose weight when they adopt a low carb diet. This leads them to think that it was the carbs leading to their weight problems.

However, it wasn't the carbs. Numerous studies have shown no differences in fat loss between low and high carb diets when you control for overall calorie intake.

What happens when people adopt low carb diets is that protein intake goes up, high reward foods (which are usually high in carbs AND fat) are reduced, and variety is reduced. Ketosis itself may also have some appetite suppressant effects. The end result is a reduction in appetite and calorie intake.

And it's also got nothing to do with reducing insulin, which I've written about in my "Insulin...an Undeserved Bad Reputation" series on Weightology.

Low carb diets work for some people, but not others. The best diet for you is one that you can adhere to over the long term. Most people will benefit from a moderate, flexible approach consisting of primarily if whole, minimally processed foods, lots of fruits and vegetables, and low energy density foods. No foods are bad, but high calorie, high reward foods are kept low."

In summary, we found that a carefully controlled isocaloric KD coincided with small increases in EE that waned over time. Despite rapid, substantial, and persistent reductions in daily insulin secretion and RQ after introducing the KD, we observed a slowing of body fat loss. Therefore, our data do not support the carbohydrate–insulin model predictions of physiologically relevant increases in EE or greater body fat loss in response to an isocaloric KD. However, it is possible that dietary carbohydrate restriction might result in decreased ad libitum energy intake—a prediction of the carbohydrate-insulin model that was not tested in the current study but deserves further investigation."

what alot of people don't get is low carb equals low calorie. which works for weight loss. So everyone is blaming carbs and sugars. I tell my boys its not what u eat, its how much u eat. Now for some because of health problems its what you eat. I've cut calories, which has cut carbs. no diet restrictions, just calorie restrictions and I've dropped 94 pounds in a years time. But what works for me, may not work for everyone else. The links u post diablo has helped me understand alot. I always look forward to them.

Today is oatmeal day for me (I have oatmeal 2-3 days per week) Heart healthy carbs are pretty important I’d say. Anyone that says they don’t want bread, pizza, beer or pasta are people I don’t know 😂. Moderation!

Low carb doesn't have to be low calorie. It depends on what you eat and how much.

What Gillian said, low carb is not the same as low calorie depends how much you’re eating. A ton of cement weighs the same as a ton of feathers.

Maybe so but a serving of pizza is 250 - 300 calories. And a serving of lettuce is 5 calories. So when counting calories u try and eat the low calorie foods which n turn are low in carb. Pasta versus veggies and fruit. And yes some people have no off switch when talking carbs, so thy would have to go all the way with keto. Whatever u choose, make sure it works for u. Something u can make into a lifestyle works best. When I'm done dieting I'm not sure how I'm gonna manage maintenance calories. Alot of times I seriously just get my 1500 in. There r days I struggle to get 500 in a day. I'm just not hungry. My Doctor says to try and get as close as I can. so I do have to try a little harder in the evening . On those days I turn towards a carb. I understand that it's ok ounce in awhile, but not all the time.

It's all about the deficit for fat loss. Yup yup.

I was browsing some of my old journals this morning from 2012/13 (when I lost 100+ pounds) and my WOE was named 'Operation Oatmeal'. So, yes, as long as there is a deficit the weight loss will happen. But as mentioned above it has to be sustainable. I think I did low fat, low cal then. The low carb this time was to get my blood sugar under control.

I'm seriously consider SoCal. Diet rich in sunshine and southern California foods. And of course....MUST MAINTAIN DEFICIT to lose weight.

That's funny.....carbs make me fat~!
22 Jul 19 by member: erikahollister
It’s just not true when dealing with diabetes and insulin resistance. Otherwise, yes, CICO and a deficit.

Yes it is. They have to do what they have to do for their health, but those conditions do not subvert the laws of thermodynamics.

yeah my diet is at least 45-55% carbs per day and I still don't have any problems losing weight

When it’s inprinted in their DNA it’s not so simple. Diabetes type 1, who need insulin and those who are born with type I diabetes due to grandparents or parents with type 1 or insulin resistant are medically completely different and our absolutely carb sensitive.
22 Jul 19 by member: jcmama777
It absolutely defies the laws of thermodynamics in regards to handling blood sugars. It’s medical science and it’s just a fact. You can’t revert a type one diabetic and when on both sides of family, you can end up with a type I diabetic child, or an insulin resistant child and they both start off from the get. It’s genetics. I’m not saying carbs are bad. Everything in moderation, however Type 1 diabetes and insulin resistant as a child is completely different than becoming a type II as an adult which is based on poor eating and family history.

Thanks for posting!!!

Not everyone fits in the same box. When children present with type I or insulin resistant it’s different.
