"It's 2019 and people still think carbs make you fat. It's still not true.

Part of this myth stems from the fact that people sometimes spontaneously lose weight when they adopt a low carb diet. This leads them to think that it was the carbs leading to their weight problems.

However, it wasn't the carbs. Numerous studies have shown no differences in fat loss between low and high carb diets when you control for overall calorie intake.

What happens when people adopt low carb diets is that protein intake goes up, high reward foods (which are usually high in carbs AND fat) are reduced, and variety is reduced. Ketosis itself may also have some appetite suppressant effects. The end result is a reduction in appetite and calorie intake.

And it's also got nothing to do with reducing insulin, which I've written about in my "Insulin...an Undeserved Bad Reputation" series on Weightology.

Low carb diets work for some people, but not others. The best diet for you is one that you can adhere to over the long term. Most people will benefit from a moderate, flexible approach consisting of primarily if whole, minimally processed foods, lots of fruits and vegetables, and low energy density foods. No foods are bad, but high calorie, high reward foods are kept low."

In summary, we found that a carefully controlled isocaloric KD coincided with small increases in EE that waned over time. Despite rapid, substantial, and persistent reductions in daily insulin secretion and RQ after introducing the KD, we observed a slowing of body fat loss. Therefore, our data do not support the carbohydrate–insulin model predictions of physiologically relevant increases in EE or greater body fat loss in response to an isocaloric KD. However, it is possible that dietary carbohydrate restriction might result in decreased ad libitum energy intake—a prediction of the carbohydrate-insulin model that was not tested in the current study but deserves further investigation."

"Carbs don't make you fat, but low carb diets work for some people and not for others. But carbs don't make you fat. But stick to what works for you. You're not a special snowflake, except in cases where you are. I just want to help, but if you say carbs make you fat than I hate you." About sum it up?

Lol, low carbers get so defensive when the science works against their myths.

Says the fellow who made a post just to bash low-carb.

All diets work, do the one you can stick to and the one that keeps you healthy if you happen to have a condition. Follow your doctors advice. Adherence trumps all. Why so butt hurt, Phil?

I fail to see how I'm butt hurt, merely repeating what you've posted.

Awareness is nice in this field. I'm posting it for the ones who falsely believe carbs create more energy from thin air. That's all, buddy.

Nope, where did I say I hate low carb dieters? Moopie and I go way back haha, silly guy

Kudos to you for tryna help, like I posted above.

"Low-carb'ers believe in myths", "low-carb'ers are butt hurt", etc. Called me, "defensive", but I just pointed out the inconsistency in what you said. It's all good. do you.

JC, I am not speaking on what people need to do to control their BS. That is a totally separate issue. Fat loss is wholly dependent on a deficit. Do what you have to do to adhere to it or vice versa if you need to gain.

I've never really understood diet heckling. Well, if you say that's not what you're doing, so be it. It certainly seems you're ripping on low-carb and encouraging others to rip on low-carb right along with you. But nay, you say, "I'm just tryna help". Perhaps I'm merely cynical and suspicious.

Nothing to see here, Nancy. I'm butt hurt, defensive, and believe in magic, apparently, and on top of all that I'm the aggressor for responding to a post intended to troll a particular type of diet.

Yep the last sentence of your previous message is on the money. But keep on bumping this post. The more people who understand the facts, the better.

So you agree that your post was intended to troll a particular type of diet. Excellent.

Diablo you hit the nail on the head with cico and moderation, what lacks is there’s many here who are type I diabetes, type II who were born initially as type I or insulin resistant and then type II based on heavy family hx of type I where insulin is used. Then type II diabetes just due to WOE. I hear you and I hear those with insulin resistance and type I diabetes and type II. Not a single one of us fits the same mold. The endocrine system is complex.

No, Phil, I was talking about this sentence. "Perhaps I'm merely cynical and suspicious." The comments didn't load in order on my end on mobile.

The thing about carbs for some of us, is that they trigger addiction behavior. They make me hungry, bingey and I over eat them. That is a cycle that causes weight gain and insulin disregulation and mental anguish. It's not fully explained by CICO. There's just more to it. - and a situation just best avoided.

It could be miscommunication especially when you don’t realize how certain people our affected by carbs. Education is key. With my history of weight, and type I diabetesin my immediate family and knowledge looking back at my health, unless I was participating in a sport was I loosing weight and perfectly proportioned. I was my slimmest running my butt off as a child in upstate New York.. just busy. I packed it on after moving to PA and was a normal weight being way heavily involved in cheer and softball. It was high school when I ate only salads as I didn’t cheer or do softball that not only did I lose w people, family members and friends got concerned. Genetics is huge. There is no way to debu
