SquirrelB's Journal, 20 Oct 18

For the last few months I have been logging everything in a spreadsheet at home, but still checking in here and things had been going very well, I hadn't cheated once on my low carb diet. Everything changed October 10th when hurricane Michael destroyed my house and both of my cars. I am thankful to still be alive and a friend is letting me stay at her home, along with 6 other people. This whole city was hit hard by the storm, the eye passed right over us. No power, no running water, SO many homeless, it is heartbreaking to go into town and see the deviation. I've seen hurricane damage when I helped out down south after Andrew hit, but it's a completely different perspective when it happens to you. It is surreal, each time I've seen my house, I still can't believe it is the house I bought and totally renovated three years ago. This has made me much more grateful for the little things in life, I'll never miss a chance to say "I love you" again because there may not be another chance to do so. Needles to say, my diet has been blown to hell. Eating MREs that are stuffed full of carbs is just adding to my depression. I am thankful to have the MREs and bottled water from FEMA, I just really wish they made low carb ones. Changing my diet so suddenly has wreaked havoc on my digestive system. For all of you, take the time to hug, kiss and tell those you care about that you love them, enjoy all the little things in life, one day they won't be there.

oh gosh that is just terrible, I am sorry for your loss. have you decided what you are going to do?? I imagine the insurance companies are going to be backed up for ever with all the losses.

This is a time to retrench and do what must be done. Eat what is available and know you have a plan for later. There is so much processing and grieving and work to be done in the here and now. Your personal self-care must take precedence including eating what is best of the options available and no angsting about it as there is nothing to be done in the moment.

Certainly glad you are ok. Very generous of your friend to help so many others. I know you were just joking about FEMA providing low carb MRE’s. Have to take the funnies where you can. Imagine trucks lined up and labeled LOW CARB HERE, LIQUID PROTEIN HERE, VEGAN HERE, PESCATARIAN OVER THERE— it would be funny

Hope things get better. Try not to let the carbs get on your nerves. Try to think of it as a temporary set back and concentrate on bigger things. Stay strong!

Most people that I know here in SoCal are donating to the Red Cross And Salvation Army. If any of you on the front of the disaster have another suggestion that would get donations to more people directly, I would be happy to pass that information on.

I attribute my success to recording "every" thing I ate for a year. Keep it up.
