jmb3450's Journal, 12 Apr 16

Seeing conversation in another journal today about acceptable amounts of rodent droppings allowed in hot dogs got me interested, so I googled and found some interesting and maybe gross documentation. Here it is...the FDA Defect Levels Handbook. View at your own risk. :)

Some particles of foreign matter are unavoidable in many foods and the allowable amounts are very minute. Still, in concept it's a little disgusting. But reading this document curbed my appetite and will help get me through fasting till this evening. By the way hot dogs aren't on the list, looks like this refers to produce, crops, and spices.

@Bruce Why are you an instigator? :D

Bruce let's collaborate on a new kitchen gadget. Toilet seat cutting boards. I've got an idea for one that would slide out from under the counter. Chop your food, then pull a flush lever and into the trash can go the scraps. It'd eliminate the need for a "garbage bowl" on the counter. Maybe we could pitch the idea on Shark Tank?

I read Hunters comment that was enough for me. Upton Sinclair wrote about this problem more than a hundred years ago. If you want to feel better about the food industry read The Jungle. You'll see how much has improved.

@Jmb I know you are kidding, but I bet it would sell as fast as those mounted singing bass plaques did about 20 years ago!

Dated a nutrition major in college. Her class took a tour of the local hot dog manufacturing facility. She began referring to them as chemical tubes and never ate another hot dog... thinking the chemicals will kill you before the other stuff will.

If you knew what the stuff the food industry allows in your food, you'd never eat again. Grow your own or else forget what you think you're eating. I studied animal science so I had to learn n tour the food industry. I still eat hot dogs. Doesn't matter because... well... like I said, I know what's in food. I just grow my own or don't care. Hot dogs get a bad rap but it's in all foods.
