Instantcrazy's Journal, 10 May 15

So I'm at the gym. Not right now, but in my story, I'm at the gym. I see this guy in about his late 50s, and he is just going to town on this chin up machine. I look at the girlfriend and say " I WANT to do that! It looks like so much fun!". So we finish the machines we are on and head over there. About 5 minutes later, I finally figure out how to get on the darn contraption. I climb on the little knee pad, grab the handles, and UUUUUGGGGGGH. I got half way up. Try again. UUUUUUUUGGGGH. I get half way up. I tell the girlfriend, "that counts as 1, that guy must be a LOT stronger than he looks".

Fast forward to the next day at work, I'm telling my co-worker at the restaurant about my one chin up. Another co-worker joins the conversation and says "Oh you have to adjust the weight." um...what? Some of you are laughing at me by now because you know the secret of this little contraption. Turns out the more weight you add the more it is supporting of your body weight. I was trying to lift my body weight, all 178.8 lbs of it. The next day I went back to that torture device, set the weight limit to 80 lbs, and proceed to do about 30 chin ups dag nab it! I can chin up 100 lbs.

Well, now I have a goal for my life. I am going to do a chin up. 1. With no weight assistance. I want to be able to grab a bar and lift my chin over that bar. I figure at some point in my life this will come in handy, like the next time I need to see over a bar.

Also, I jogged. 8 minutes. non-consecutively. I hate jogging, but I did it! I downloaded the couch to 5K app and jogged my butt off. I really wanted to give up after the first jog, then the second jog, then the well you get the idea, but before I knew it I had jogged 8 minutes. Thank you, thank you. Your applause is too kind.

I wouldn't have known that about the chin-up bar either. Never heard of such a thing. Of course, I've never actually participated in a gym so...maybe don't base "normal" knowledge on me. LOL

THAT really is great for you! We have to start somewhere and then compete against yourself to see the improvements!

I wouldn't have known what this machine was unless I saw someone on it. I belong to the gym that offers pizza on Monday so they can guarantee membership. The machine also does dips, but I've already mastered going down I need to work on up. There is a rock near my parents house I could probably climb someday. Next week 75 lbs.

hahaha thanks for the great story!! I honestly didnt know you had to adjust the weight either!! Chin ups have always been my weakness for sure!! I remember (fixing to give my age away) in P.E. we would have to do "fitness" test~~amt of push ups sit ups chin ups etc you could do in a certain amount of time. Everything was a breeze for me until I got to the chin ups!! .....wait?? what??? LOL I just read Buffy Bear's comment and had to go back to your story...missed the PIZZA part!! hahahaha ok,so STAY AWAY from the PIZZA if you want to succeed a no weight limit chin up!!!! hahahahaha

Planet Fitness has Pizza on the 1st Monday. I had a piece one day as it was really late, still had errands to do, it was free and I was hungry. It was soggy and awful only ate a bite or 2. They also do bagles on some morning as well once a month.

LOL--Great story! However, if you were able to do 30 chin ups or pull ups, you can/should use less weight now! You're closer to your goal than you think. Lots of back exercises as well. My goal is unassisted pull ups (on the bar); still using a band but can do more and with a lighter band. At 54 and never exercised before the last two years (and having lost 75#), I'm feeling pretty good about having gotten to this point!

Bagels on the first Tuesday morning, I believe! Glad I read this, I wouldn't have known about that machine either. I belong to the tootsie roll gym also!

Yeah Yeah I forgot about the bagels. guaranteed clientele. There's a video on YouTube of a guy on an ab machine eating a slice of pizza. lol wait why the tootsie roll gym? other than that hilarity it seems to be a decent gym. I remember for the fitness test the boys got to do chin ups but the girls had to grab the bar the other way I guess just to prove how weak girls are or because we aren't supposed to have biceps. Oh yes my wrists are super strong let me just do this all day. Great job Whybrown! I will lower the weight.

They also have free midge tootsie rolls regular or special nasty purple ones. I've actually raided their regular tootsie rolls now and then. I run a pretty low blood sugar and after a workout a couple have stopped me from having to make an extra stop on the way home as I knew my blood sugar had dropped too low. I try to take a small peanut butter sandwich to eat on the way after work, but I forget to pack it sometimes. Lunch is at around 11 so by 5:30 or 6:00 the bottom may have dropped out on me. I'll have to check out the chin up bar. I really need to start getting back there. This week it depends on the weather, trying to get some outside stuff done before its starts raining again on Wed. they moved it up a day, and have a ball game to go to on Friday.
