Question for the IF peeps. I stopped eating yesterday at 6:00 (omad tacos). I got up at like 9:30 and ate three tiny plums. They are prune plums, small (like walnut size) and it turns out quite tart. Guessing ~20 cals or less each. So would you restart your fast, or not? I don't really obsess about this, i usually eat more if i am gonna eat and restart the fast. But last night i remembered i had bought these little plums and started obsessing about the fact that i wanted to taste them before they wend bad. Just curious.

You mean start a long fast after the plums? I would not. It would just be a non fasting day then.

Jen, it's been forty years since I did fasting, and my memory is not that great. But if you did not get a rise in appetite shortly thereafter, you probably did not trigger much blood sugar/insulin wise. On the other hand, your digestive system will have to operate some to deal with the residue, but not much more effort than turning over in your sleep. Purist would say restart, but practically I would say keep going if your appetite is still easily in control. It did not take much to wake up my system and be ready to eat a full meal back when I did it.

Oh, I hear a LITTLE obsessing :) You know what they say - don't sweat the SMALL stuff (like those plums)

@liv, i just meant when i break my fast today (and i wouldn't call it a long fast in any case), would count the fast as beginning at 6 pm (not count the plums) or at 9:30 (count the plums)? I will probably count them, but just wondering if that is a little too type A.

I wouldn’t even worry about it.

Yes tom, i see what you are saying. That's just it, usually if i eat, i keep eating, so a restart is not in question.

What they said.

I myself am a little corner- cutter, so I wouldn’t count them. But...those little corners can really add up if you’re not careful. If you don’t have a lot to lose or don’t care to be super strict then don’t count them. Also next time you might rethink indulging in the little plums until it is truly time to break your fast so you don’t have to worry!

Hi Jenge - I do a lot of fasting and read Guide to Intermittent Fasting by Jason Fung. It's not a biggie, but those plums broke the fast. You would count the fast starting at 9:30. If you had coffee or bone broth then you can keep going. What kind of fasting are you doing? 16:8? All kinds of ways you can do it successfully and also be flexible with it!

Ty guys! I basically started with 16:8, then 18:6, now generally 20:4. I do drink acv in water and black coffee, but other than that, nothing. And yeah, i try to cut corners and "ballpark" estimate foods so as not to get too obsessive. Basically today i will break the fast at 2:30, so it will either be 17 hours or 20.5 hours, depending on the plums.

I personally wouldn't worry about it. I don't do IF or any fast to achieve some state for my body by not eating. I just like feeling "empty" or that food isn't digesting for a big part of the day. If this was for IF, forget about the plums and just get back on your regular schedule. I also do IF because I usually end up with only 2 meals a day.

One of the great things about IF is it keeps things simple. There is no real choice - the guidelines are straight forward ‘clean’ IF is only water, tea or coffee. You do get to decide how long you want to fast or if you want to ‘dirty fast’.You did a great job in beginning to If. I think it in slips that we learn. and find out what works best for each of us. Good question!

Back when I started on FS I was told anything 50kcal and over would be breaking a fast. Pretty sure that was an opinion and not fact though. Honestly I wouldn’t worry about it much unless you obsess like I do lol. (But it sounds like you don’t)
