Fritzy 22's Journal, 31 Oct 22

I hate letting Bobby outside when it's dark but he just couldn't wait until 7 this morning or any morning. I got up at 5 and fed him and the cats. Finally at 6 I turned on all the back lights and let him out telling him to be careful. The first thing he did was run towards the back of the fenced in area. I am worried about mountain lions and bears! But it was a deer. I was so excited thinking my bucks were back. I talked to "Buck" but when it came closer I saw it was a doe with babies, then another doe with fawns. Altogether about 10 deer. I don't think any of them were bucks. They all know me. They follow me when I go outside during hours when it's light - I fill up a water bucket, water the fruit trees and other plants. I put out bird seed - mostly sunflower seeds. The deer eat it, but not all. I think the seeds are too small for them and there is still plenty left for the little sparrows who are usually on the ground.

Not sure how much of a walk I'll do today. I had over 21,000 steps on the step counter yesterday! I get at least 5000 or more every day just around the house but a long walk is really good exercise. I'm thinking about making chili today. It is supposed to rain tomorrow which is so exciting. So tired of the drought, I think it's 3 years and counting. And before that we only had 1 or 2 years that weren't droughts.

My first thought was that your life sounds like Snow White's retirement! I have to get out walking again.

Thanks Liv. I did a walk that was just over 5000 steps. There is a trail behind some houses so I walked along that and missed the garbage trucks! Crossing my fingers for the rain. The local news station says between noon and 4pm tomorrow is when most of it will fall so I should be able to do a morning walk. Thanks Abba - I bet Snow White wouldn't like all the deer and turkey poop all over the yard! But I enjoy the wildlife and love all the different birds. As soon as it got light the sparrows that arrive every October were all over the ground eating the bird seed. The step counter is what is currently motivating me to walk.

As a fellow Californian, I agree that rain is a something to get excited about. I turn off all the lights and burn candles, crack the windows open to hear the patter. When I lived on the East Coast it was a 3x/week, but here it's thrilling, especially at night.

Bananas - that's a good idea with the candles! I have them all over the house but forget to burn them unless the power goes out.

We used to have chili all the time on Halloween but not today. We are burning candles every day now.

Morticia - I ended up making meatloaf instead of chili. I had thawed just over 1 pound of ground beef. Meatloaf was easier. I got a huge package of ground beef from Costco and froze 3 or 4 freezer bags of about 1.5 pounds plus several patties to make tacos or just a burger. Chili will be soon. This is really the only time of year I cook. I have frozen chicken breast and will make chicken stew soon! It doesn't seem like Halloween when the kids don't come by for candy.

I love your story about the deer. enjoy the rain. So much of the country needs rain. Here in Missouri we are so dry.

Thanks Diana - I have to start staying up later then I won't wake up so early. But now with turning back the clocks this coming weekend I'll be lucky to stay up past 6! Thanks Wholefood - We are always in a drought in Northen California. When do you get rain in Missouri? Do you get snow where you are? It usually rains here from October (if we're lucky) until March, sometimes April. Thanks Anne and Sugarplum! Thanks Navywife I stand near the garden hose in case anything comes after Bobby. I've never seen a mountain lion here but they are here often because of all the deer.
