Fritzy 22's Journal, 30 Oct 22

Another long walk this morning. Took 2 hours, 14,200 steps. I reset the counter when I started on the walk. Same route as yesterday but added some steps on side streets and the loop around lake houses I walked twice, an extra 1000 steps. I may be doing too much too fast. I'm really tired now. And I'm not sure how much I should walk Bobby, he hasn't done much while I haven't been doing much. There was a point I thought he might be limping a little but then he stopped. Tomorrow I may just do the little loop I had been doing - it's garbage day and I hate walking when they are out there making so much noise. It seems like the trucks just follow me and I can't get away from them! Now I'm going to use some ice and take some Ibuprofen because I am sore! But in a good way.

Not sure what I'll eat today. I stir fried all the brussels sprouts and mushrooms yesterday. Still have plenty of asparagus I can cook and half a hamburger patty. Too tired to think of anything else right now.

Forgot to mention - there were lots and lots of deer out. Not on my street but all over the place. Even 3 huge bucks (they still have their antlers) in a group running across the road to get to the lake. And plenty of does with juveniles - not babies with spots anymore.

Do you have any beans? In a pinch you can microwave/steam a half cup of frozen corn and add to black/pinto beans, then season with a splash of cider vinegar or BBQ sauce or garlic salt or hot sauce. Nice job on all the walking. Do the deer scatter on garbage day?

Thanks Anne! Thanks Bananas - I'm not crazy about beans but sometimes I'll add some frozen peas to my stir fry for another 5 or so grams of protein. I also have chick peas I will roast and sometimes just cook them in the pyrex dish with a meatloaf. Lots of kidney beans for chili. I have cans of baked beans, pork and beans. Just not a big fan. The deer don't usually scatter on garbage day. Usually they are around - they seem to stay within a range of half a dozen homes. Not sure where my bucks are, someone thought because of the rut - their mating season. The does are still around.

Beans can kinda be plain, I agree. You can always add them to a vegetable soup or a serving of lentils, or just about anything. I know you said you don't care for edamame, but just like the chick peas you mentioned, you can roast/toast & season them and they will taste COMPLETELY different. At your grocery store they are available in the nuts/snacks section, dry roasted by a brand called Seapoint Farms in a red bag. They're worth trying dried and crunchy-salty if you don't like them steamed.

Sounds like you may be pushing yourself too hard. I'm 70 and my doctor is pleased with anything over 7000 steps. I make sure I get in 10,000 and sometimes more.

Thanks Bananas - you reminded me - I did buy a bag of dry roasted edamame awhile back. Sometimes at Winco I buy roasted soy nuts they have alot of protein but I have trouble with portion control with anything dry roasted and salted. Thanks Morticia - I felt like I over did it a bit today when I got home. I'm doing walks within a couple weeks of starting to walk again that took me quite awhile to do previously. I feel fine now, even managed a little housework. Now that I've had a 14,000 step walk I'll be aiming for 15,000!

Roasted soy nuts are edamame. Soy beans is just another name for them, just like chick peas = garbanzo beans. Someone here on FS came up with a strategy on buying big bags of snacks, and that was to immediately portion out the whole container into ziplock snack bags, and then put them back into the original big container. Save money, save calories. Worth a try because they're big protein.

Thanks Bananas - I thought the roasted edamame tasted like the soy nuts! I've tried the portioning trick. It might work with something like the soy nuts but I haven't had much luck with it. I bought some molasses cookies that I love from the bakery department. They are pretty bid. The container has 8-10 cookies. I tried putting one in a freezer bag and then put 8 little bags with one cookie in the garage freezer. I remember going to the freezer about 5 times one day. There are things I will over eat and others that I'm okay with.

Even if you overeat the soy nuts/roasted edamame, you will at least be getting a decent hit of protein. A lot of people have a preference on the foods that they binge on -- salty vs. sweet. You can also find toasted peas in that snackfood section, and they have decent protein. My local Vons has their own brand of these (along with toasted pepitas, sunflower seeds, chick peas) located in the produce section, tucked under the bins of potatoes and onions.
