gilliansings's Journal, 02 Mar 14

I am so glad to see my efforts rewarded. I know that it doesn't always show on the scale. I did all my measurements last Sunday, so it's a bit early to do that again. But, if over the next few weeks I hit a wall or have a bad week, I plan to re-do my measurements. Knowing that one can lose inches but not pounds can help re-motivate a person and keep up their morale for the long-term goal.

I am going to have such a great day! Our Oscar party is tonight. I now look forward to gatherings that have food because I am getting good at choosing ahead of time what my "cheat" item will be and then being perfectly satisfied with the other modest portions and good choices. That way, I choose something I will get a lot of pleasure from, instead of just generally making bad choices and afterwards having nothing but regret and guilt.

Happy Sunday everyone!

I envy you that you can have a cheat item. I'm an abstainer, not a moderator, so I cannot have even one bite of one thing I'm not supposed to or it could lead to disaster. People who are able to be moderate don't understand this, but it's just the way some people are wired. It's so easy for me to just say no than to have even one bite. I'm going to an Oscar party, too. It'll be an all-fruit dinner. Oh boy! Have fun, Gil!

That's great; and its one thing I wish I had done - take my measurements before I started this journey. I spose I can start now, since I do have a ways to go still. Congrats on your accomplishments!

Congratulations on your accomplishments as well as your determination. I know the weight does not come off by it self, it takes a change in life style. I am finally at that point that I have to change so I hope one day to look back and have a cheat item as well. Have fun tonight!

Thanks everyone! I suppose I should clarify in regards to the "cheat" item. Technically, since I am doing my own diet, there really aren't any rules. I have made a conscious decision, however, that the food I put into my body needs to be good for me 95% of the time. I eat very little "snack" foods and have significantly decreased my intake of bread, rice, potatoes and pasta. I am not doing a strict low-carb diet, but by increasing my vegetable and fruit intake and decreasing my starch intake, I am able to stay in the RDI range that I chose (since the site gave me too high of one). For me, certain items are a no-no because they do lead me to eat more than I intend. These are chips and the like. Ice cream is one treat that I am able to limit myself to a small serving without problem. Maybe some people do feel safer and more compliant not touching such things, but I have failed on diets in the past if I couldn't partake of certain foods on occasion. So, if it's working for me, I'm going to keep making that call within reason. I did not touch a single tortilla chip at our Oscar party. I measured my measly 1/3 cup of long-grain rice with cilantro & lime. I did not put cheese on my chicken rice bowl because there were plenty of other flavors going on and I had cheese on my cauliflower earlier today. I hope everyone else that went to an Oscar party met the goal they set for themselves.
