59Carol's Journal, 05 Jun 21

Good morning! This week I have lost 2.4 pounds which is substantial in my plan. I aim for a one pound loss per week so 2.4 is a lot.

The irony this time around is the nuts again! I weigh them out and place them in a less high traffic area of my kitchen. I sprinkle them on my food. At the end of the day I have some left. In the morning I weigh what is left and subtract that off. All week long I was subtracting 120 to 240 calories a day putting me into a large deficit! Too funny since this was the area that I was struggling to not over eat in!

Speaking of night eating - I have adopted the nothing after 7 pm habit. I am in about week 2 of doing that. The first bit was hard as I was going up against some well ingrained habits of thought and action. Now it is a non-issue which is nice.

I have also adopted the drink a cold (16oz) glass of water before each meal. Apparently their are studies that indicate this boosts your metabolism! I normally drink room temperature water so cold is a change for me. I figure it can't hurt me and it has been a nice addition.

To my complete horror, I discovered the BMI for my height is 5 pounds lower than I thought! So now my next goal is to get to 154 to get out of the 'over weight' category. I thought it was 160 so I had to re-adjust my thinking. That is only 12 pounds away so I can do that.

Finally my big excitement was receiving some enlarged and framed pictures in the mail yesterday. I had some black and white pictures from my mom dating 1930-1945 that I wanted enlarged and framed for the basement bedrooms. My son did his magic and then he sent them on to an online company he has worked with in the past. The pictures turned out nicer than I expected. What a bonus! I can hardly wait to get them hung up. I have a friend coming to help with that -- I just don't do 'straight' with any degree of accuracy.

I appreciate all of your wonderful support. It is fabulous to have the 'atta boys!" I had to laugh today. My sister told me about a study that said that my optimal healthy weight according to scientific studies is 124-136! That seems pretty out of reach at this moment. I had only been prepared to go down to 140 at the lowest. For now it will be looking to get out of overweight - 154 here I come!

Sarah- it is people like you who can do straight that people like me depend on! Periodically I want someone like you to visit my house and adjust all of my pictures!! I encourage such actions when you visit me. :)

Well done Carol. Much going on at your house, as usual. I love the idea of the pictures from your mom! As for you BMI, remember, that number is an average. I would find the weight that feels right for me and go with that.

I agree Shirfleur however I am in unknown weight territory so I am looking at the signposts to give me some guidance of what is 'normal'. It has been so darn long since I have seen anything close to normal that I am taking my cues from outside experts as well as checking in with myself as to how I feel. I have spent so many years at very high weights that a high weight has become normalized for me. My ultimate goal is a mix of feeling good, being healthy and looking well.

My nutrition prof presented a study in one of my classes a few years ago that suggested that the upper level of normal BMI/the lower level of overweight BMI tended to encompass the healthiest people, especially women. I haven't been able to find that study since, and I haven't found any others that repeat those findings as blatantly, but I hang on to that knowledge with a vice grip. 😁 Re: hanging things straight - laser levels! Home Depot carries a tiny little cube/shaped one that you can pin to your wall with a thumbtack. It saved my butt when I was installing new shelves!

She Loves- that is very encouraging info from your nutrition prof. I love hanging onto knowledge that makes us feel good with a vice grip. I have a few of those maxims in my pocket too! Laser levels may be in my future. Right now there is a fellow (I want to call him a kid as he grew up with my daughter but he is 40+) who takes straight and measuring heights and centering on a wall to new heights so I will get him to hang the pictures. I may do the laser level as a maintenance method!
