Joelmel's Journal, 17 Jan 14

Went to the doctor and had great news on my blood pressure which was down to 121/73 for the second visit. It had been getting close to going on medication. Losing 20 lbs made a huge difference.

The bad news is that she wants me to up my daily caloric intake which I don't agree with. I figure I can eat a balanced diet when I'm at a maintenance weight. Right now, at 330 lbs, I need to lose a lot of weight and not worry about whether or not I had a starch and a whole grain in my diet each day. She wants me to up my caloric intake to 1400.

I tried to eat according to the plan yesterday and today I'm up. And irritated. And frustrated. Neither of which are good if I want to stay positive and committed to my weight loss.

CONGRATULATIONS Joelmel, you've done a great job! Losing 20 lbs in a month is awesome. Getting your blood pressure down to normal is fantastic too. BUT, continuing to lose that much weight that fast almost guarantees you'll gain it all back. If you lose it slowly, giving your mind & body a chance to get used to all of the adjustments along the way, you will have a much better chance of keeping the weight off. I'm not trying to be a party pooper, I certainly have my own "back yard" to clean up, LOL. But I think maybe it would be wise if you tried raising the calorie count just that little bit, & see if you continue to lose, but more slowly which is what I think will happen, & in the long run that will be a very good thing. Just my humble opinion, & I wish you all the best in whatever you decide. Keep it up gal!

Glammer - I know you are correct. I'm adding in more vegis in order to push the levels up. I'm also going to add a grapefruit a day and probably apples - I like them and they don't set up cravings for anything else. Those simple additions will likely get me to where my doctor wants me to be. Thank you for your support; it is a struggle to find a balance right now. I'm hoping the amount of attention I'm paying to what I eat and how it impacts me will result in more knowledge about my body and how it uses food.

I am currently at 206lbs and I eat between 1400-1600 cals a day, so i would have to agree with your doc. The secret to weight loss is to find a plan that is both healthy and sustainable. Too low calories is only going to short yourself in the long run. Seems to me like you have a great thing going. If you find yourself gaining on fourteen hundred calories than you need to take a closer look at where the cal are coming from, and possibly lower carbs. When/if weight loss slows you will need to up the activity. Its a constant learning process but once you find your groove its easy peesy, even when you slip up, just keep moving forward. You are off to an excellent start, keep up that forward momentum. Best of luck to you!!
