J8waves's Journal, 15 Sep 19

I have been diligently going to the gym. Now I need to be more strict with recording what I eat. Very hard to stick to keto.

It can be; but if you are motivated and you log, you can do it.

It gets to be a habit; you'll get there.

@J8waves, Dr. Ken D. Berry's YouTube series, "Keto 101," describes how to get started on that WOE. I started at 100g/day total carbs and began working my way down. However, when I was adding up my carbs as I ate my meals, there was no way to stay below even 50g/day. Planning meals at least a day in advance was absolutely necessary. I was able to begin hitting <20g/day total when I began to focus on a mostly carnivore WOE: beef, pork, some chicken; fish and seafood; eggs; and olive oil, rendered bacon fat (poured off cooked bacon), and a quality butter (Kerrygold is my go-to now).

@J8waves, I also phased in intermittent fasting, increasing my fast period an hour or so at a time, from 12 to 16-22 hours fasted per day. Keto and IF work well together. Last week, I did my first water-only 72-hr fast - and amazed myself!

I'm having the same problem. I'm not really doing Keto, but for the first time in my life I'm actually journaling foods and looking at carbs. I'm at around 100 g of carbs a day, and I'm wasting it on toppings like honey or mayo. I make homemade honey mustard and homemade dressings, so I need to find ways to eliminate those extra carbs. J8waves, I'm with you. Just being stricter about recording helps to see those hidden carbs and sugars that don't jump out at you.

binkytexas, check into Allulose - it's low calorie, zero glycemic index, made from sugar. I buy Hoosier Hill Farm brand on Amazon. It's more expensive than Stevia or monkfruit, but it doesn't have bitter aftertaste.

I gave up on keto, too complicated. I am very simple.

I agree recording is good. Very often a game changer. measure your food as well as much as you can. Keep at it!!!

Thanks gz9gig. I've never heard of it! I usually use Stevia, but some recipes need the consistency of the honey. If Allulose is better than Stevia, I'm in

Then just record calories. No need for keto. Carbs are better for lifting anyway.

If It’s hard now in the beginning it does not seem like it will be a sustainable diet . Hopefully you won’t be on the roller coaster weight gain n loss

I think you will be surprised by what you learn about yourself by consistently logging. ✅ (I never tried keto but wish you success.)

@J8waves, at first, keto seemed foreign, odd, complicated, and even unappetizing to me, too. I did a lot of reading. Starting is a matter of eliminating carbs in starchy foods and sugars. The more I do it, the more I've made it my habit, a way of life. I don't find keto/carnivore to be at all complicated, and I'm improving my T2 diabetes and losing weight. Those are my critical concerns. But it's not for everyone, certainly. The important thing is to find what works for you and stick to it.

Binkytexas, healthy-oil-based mayonnaise is fine on keto. My choice is Hellman's olive-oil mayo.

Thank you All so much guys! Those are previous tips and advise from your experiences. I’ll skip breakfast this morning and do a 16hr Min IF, hope that will kick start me into ketosis.
