Steven Lloyd's Journal, 31 Aug 19

Down from my last weigh in, so even more room "to play with" from my recorded maximum set weight of 198.

Note; I do weigh myself every day and sometimes more than once...mostly to monitor weight gains from large meals or dehydration from longer, hard, sweaty activities.

My glycogen and water weight fluctuations are why I don't post daily weights, I will only post sustained ups or downs (fat and/or muscle lost/gained).

Not saying that's right for everyone as many successful buddies here on FS post weights much more often, but it works for me. I do try to keep my weight within a narrow weight window (hydrated weight) and monitor my weight quite often, especially when very active to see what's going on. Thankfully, no sustained ups over the last three years (since 2016). Lean muscle mass is about the same, with bodyfat % down a bit from 2016.

Just for the curious...from my monitoring, I've seen my weight move down 5 pounds in less than 2 hours and over 10 pounds (definitely not good!!) in a long endurance exercise day (especially in desert or dry mountain air)...those big losses are when re-hydration was compromised by unplanned events, definitely not fun recovery from those days (lots of cramps, etc.)!!

Good luck all, take care,
Steven

It is helpful to hear what you find. In weight loss, I had a very strict diet routine, and saw a very stable loss. In maintenance, the scale numbers was like a rubber ball bouncing on a hard floor. Only explanation I could come up with, was that the greater variety of food, created a greater variety of water content in the colon. I also found some foods was greatly inflammatory, which could make the body swell up. I also found long outdoor activities in hot weather created a big drop. I found it a bit stressful, and currently take a little break from the scales to better be able to focus hard on other body priorities. With this long experience you have with the ups and downs, it probably do not stress you that much anymore.

Looking at the gorgeous picture, and it does motivate. Golf was a favorite activity for years.

Thanks that is great info- I tend to get discouraged by fluctuations in my weight but I might try your method and just look for the overall trend!

Thanks Diddlee! Also clothes fit and how the body feels/looks tells just as much or more than scale weight.

Thanks Groatmeal...for sure keep at it, as a weight downtrend sometimes stalls and plateaus, even though fat loss is still going on. Also, sometimes just not gaining in a month is a big win!!

It is really insightful to see this post on the day I made goal weight. I know this next year will be especially important to stabilize this loss. I have been weighing only once a week for the first 35 pounds or so lost, but have kicked that up to nearly every day to accustom myself to the fluctuations. I still only record here once a week. You have done so well for so long and I hope in a few years to have this same recorded.

Hi old friend Kpw!! We do get over to the Big Island a bit...we have a place about 1.1miles from the World Ironman start and finish line. We'll be there during Ironman this year, VERY busy but also very inspiring ...🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Thank you mellissatwa. At times it has seemed easy but also not going to lie...sometimes it is as hard as anything not to gain weight and fat. For sure I've never taken it for granted that I've got it completely figured out or that I can just forget about the good habits that got me to a healthy weight. Some habits have become second nature which has made it easier, like logging food and trying to maintain a good calorie balance that accounts for social activities and the odd diet indiscretions. Good luck on your next phase (maintenance), think of it as a new beginning, a great oppprtunity to keep your hard earned efforts intact!!

Thanks MC! We don't golf as much as we used to, mostly social, couples golf. We love the ocean activities and hiking on the Big Island, it has for sure become our favorite!
