SoCalPam's Journal, 23 Jul 18

Yesterday I spent the day making a raised bed garden for my back yard. I live in a townhome, so I had to be creative with the design (it comes out over the patio in an "L" shape) and it turned out really well.

I've been gradually returning to "heavy" DIY after 9 months off due to knee injuries. It was astonishing to discover how weak I was as I picked up heavy bags of soil (but then I was exonerated when my super fit 21-year-old grunted and breathed as he moved them from the garage to the patio). I felt much more proud of myself from getting them from the pile at Home Depot to the cart to my car to the garage. Whew!

Lost a couple of pounds in the process, probably due to all the sweat! I made good choices for food, too, up to and including shrimp with rice and bread last night. I earned it! Stayed within my RDI, too.

This WOE is becoming a way of life for me. It feels good to get my body back. I believe that I was able to do as much as I did this weekend due to the levels of inflammation in my body reducing due to food changes. I had ice cream on Saturday, which was a HUGE treat but haven't had a single sugar craving since then. In the past, eating a trigger made me dive right in and eat until I was bloated, but those feelings have passed.

The picture shows 2 types of tomatoes planted + potatoes, sweet potatoes, and rosemary. I need to add more dirt and I'd like to plant some peas, but that's for another day.

Pam, it turned out beautiful! Great job on the garden and your WOE. Getting rid of that inflammation is what is all about, for some of us anyway. 😊👍

Love the garden! It will be so much easier to keep weed free and all those lovely veggies will be ready from garden to kitchen in just minutes. My 11-yr-old grandson has his very first own raised garden this year. He is so proud!

My cat is excited; it's a giant kitty box for her :( A friend suggested sprinkling orange peel around or some cotton balls soaked in either peppermint oil or rubbing alcohol. I like the idea of natural organic fertilizer, but... ick, right?

Fried crushed hot peppers, like you put on pizza, will keep the cat OUT. And it's cheap. Trust me, it works. It'll only hurt his feelings.

I will keep the excess tomatoes.....please

Covering the box with chicken wire will keep the cat out for now, but when the plants grow bigger, you will have to take it off. Or, you can simply build a few removable chicken wire frames to surround the box and remove when you need access to the raised bed.

I feel for you with the knee injury. I started here in 2013, then had major knee break in 3 places with a torn acl. Now 4 yrs later I am getting life and my woe straightened out again. Your project looks great! Plz keep posting pics of it as your veggies grow.

Mjgh06 -- one of my knees is acting up again; I guess I did too much over the weekend. The tendons and ligaments are twanging like a country banjo. Your knee issues still sound worse, though! I'm glad you're feeling better.
