abbadabba's Journal, 06 Apr 18

Just want to put it out there: I don't do keto. I eat whatever the heck I want to. But since I want to also lose weight, I count the calories and I get out and exercise 3 or 4 times a week. Shooting for 5 times a week exercise but usually don't make it, so I just got an exercise bike for my house too. It was free - lots of exercise equipment is given away for free!
EDITED TO ADD: I have no overriding health issues so I do have many options when it comes to what I eat - I know diabetes is reduced greatly by a ketogenic/low carb diet - so no intention to say any WOE is "bad" just not what I am capable of achieving.
This morning I gave away the rest of the cookies my friend gave me because every time I saw them I had to have one and they are 100 calories apiece.
One thing that makes me seriously check what I am doing all the time is seeing the pictures of food on this site, hearing that the person hasn't been losing, and then realizing that half of what they show in their picture isn't counted in their food for the day. So, I try to be honest even though I would really like to trick myself into thinking that the cookie at midnight before I go to bed is really something to count on the next day. Or that the sip of wine on the holidays isn't really 10 ounces of calorie-filled sugar. Or that a sprinkling of cheese doesn't need to count or that low-fat means a daily dose won't add up.
So, calories in, calories out. If I am really going to live this way for the rest of my life, then I really need to know what I am actually doing to myself. Can't change a habit you won't admit to yourself.
Got my butt off the couch and abandoned my pets last night to get to the dance to burn off that lemon cookie! Going out dancing tonight too. The dancing is also a social time - there are people at the dances that I only see at the dances, but I have be seeing the same people and dancing with them for over 5 years now so that is my social time as well as exercise. Check out contradance if you are looking to burn some calories: 800 calories in two hours!
Off to log in those midnight snacks. Have a GREAT Friday!

Yes I also every little thing I eat, if I don’t want to count it I don’t eat it.

And if I don’t know how many calories I overestimate

I count every calorie too. If I happen to have a glass of wine or a snack at night it’s all recorded. My weight isn’t moving much even with my exercise classes but hoping to do some walking soon. That’s if winter will turn to spring 😎

I don't do Keto either. But since so many people on this site do, it does make me mindful of carbs. But I pay more attention to getting enough protein and calories.

You're the same as me Abbadabba. I can't do keto and record every bite and every drink (except water). Have a super Friday 🙂

I also only count calories. However, I have not started exercising yet. I felt it more important to loose the weight first. This approach forced me to relearn to eat and to be more conscious of the things I did need to get rid of. There were not many items, but there were a few I have gotten out of my diet. My thoughts behind this approach is my new habits will carry forward with me so I can keep the weight off.

I have done keto in the past and lost 50 lb in 6 months, then regained it all plus more in 3 months because I was so hungry for carbs! I have since discovered that lack of carbs makes your thyroid drop, so if you have any thyroid problem at all, keto is not good for you.

Any diet or fad whatever irritates me... calories in calories out, done! The diets and fads seem to give way to obsession and over thinking. There is no need to complicate something that is so simple. So what I am trying to say here is you I applaud your approach!!!!!

3-4 times a week is plenty, if you can manage only 3 that’s just fine, if you can’t, even 2 would be enough. As long as you’re not feeling overly fatigued/lacking energy/annoyed/ tired blah blah blah then no worries 👍🏻

To each their own. I found it simpler to eliminate processed and refined foods, and skip most side dishes. You'd be amazed how doing those two things can significantly improve the effectiveness of your efforts.

So how do you get free exercise equipment?

@Gingerk65 I live in a suburb of Boston and the freecycle.com sites have exercise equipment all the time for free.

Thanks for the answer! I live in rural Texas but will check the site to see if it has anything in Texas.

I totally agree! I watched my Mom go on fad diets. She would drop a bunch of weight and then gain it all back and then some. I feel like I'm too obsessed with food in general, if I'm counting or eliminating something all together. I just cut back on the bad stuff and watch my portions.

Well said. Those "a nibble here, a sip there" calories will add up in a hurry and sabotage weight loss, which leads to being discouraged and giving up. Slippery slope.

I agree. While keto works for some folks, it's not for everyone. I don't believe in deprivation. I believe in moderation. I try to eat healthier foods, but I do treat myself with a small bite of dark chocolate after supper. If I want a glass of wine of a piece of cake, I make a caloric adjustment. If I go over a little one day (which happens on occasion), I eat less the next day. To me, it's a way of life, not a diet. I record everything and sometimes overestimate calories just in case. Our bodies need carbs, I don't care what the latest research says. Fruit naturally has carbs. If we didn't need them, it wouldn't have them!

Keto is an obesity therapy.
