Fritzy 22's Journal, 23 Feb 24

I am finding it way too easy to do absolutely nothing all day if I want. I have an excuse, my knee. I am hoping that if I rest it, it may heal. I am using a wedge pillow to keep my knee elevated, but I have told myself I have to get up at least once an hour and move around a bit. I keep a pedometer in my pocket and my goal is at least 200 steps an hour. It usually ends up being 400 or more steps. My new commitment is to pack at least one thing every day, throw something out and clean something. I have no idea when the house I will be moving to will be built or even when they will start building. This morning I brought a,framed picture in from the garage, cleaned it (glass front) and got the vacuum to clean any dust on the picture. Then I packed it using an old towel instead of newspaper. Then filled up the rest of the box with other small framed pictures. Since I had the vacuum out, I vacuumed the kitchen and hallway by the guest rooms. Changed the sheets on the bed in the guest room and mopped the kitchen floor. So I've met my packing and cleaning goals for the day. Now my knee is aching after going up and down the garage stairs at least a dozen times.

Plan to bake chicken breast and make Asian chicken salad for lunch. My eating has been bad for about 2 weeks. I hope to get back on track soon, but until I really feel the commitment in my mind I keep on eating things I shouldn't.

My hubby has medical problems too and doesn't feel like doing much. I think the hourly moving around is a great idea. You are doing well with that goal. I ahare your goal of throwing something out and cleaning something.

Thanks Morticia! I might be using my knee as an excuse to be lazy! But if it's possible that my knee can heal without surgery then staying off my feet makes sense to me. I might have done s little too much this morning with vacuuming, mopping the floor changing sheets on the bed plus emptying litter boxes and then taking them outside to wash them out.. I could have done a little bit of that over several hours. But my knee really started aching and the ibuprofen hasn't helped at all today. I have been throwing things out and taking things to the thrift store for the past 2 or 3 years, but it's amazing I can still find something to toss out every day

I was thinking about you. Glad to see your post. Sounds like you are keeping active. The knee is a bummer and I think resting it sounds like a good idea. Asian chicken and salad sounds delicious. I had fried chicken yesterday. Really good but not considered healthy. Hope you and your animals have a nice Saturday

Fritzy, I’m sorry to hear you are still having knee pain. I feel for you! It’s hard to be motivated when we don’t feel well. Keep trying to get back to a healthier you. I think if you don’t you will find it harder and harder to get back to it…At least that’s how it is for me….take care and moving around every hour is a good thing! 💜💜💜💜

Thanks Liv! I'm not that active. I'm lying down most of the day with my leg elevated. But it does help to get up once every hour and get in about 400 steps which is easy in my house. Just taking clothes out of the dryer and hanging them up or folding them is over 100 steps. Going to scoop the litter boxes once for twice a day is another 100-200 steam s. Even stuff like taking bird seed out to the r do is moving around. Today, though I am going to rest more because for the pain from yesterday. Ibuprofen helped last night but it's hurting again this morning. Today I will rest 2 hours before getting up a little. This morning I stayed in bed 2 hours after feeding the dogs and cats. Then I prepared some panko crusted chicken breasts and put in the oven. Cleaned the kitchen counters, started the dishwasher and mopped the floor again.

Thanks Diana! The whole knee experience is evolving. It started with not being able to put weight on the knee at all for about 10 days. Then I could walk but had throbbing knee pain for a couple of weeks. Then I just got aches in the knee and started hearing the knee pop almost every time I move it. Yesterday was the first time ibuprofen didn't help during the day. I wish one of the doctors would tell me what to do. Do I rest the knee, is it okay to walk? They all say walking is okay on a level surface. But I've noticed that the knee pain starts after a walk. As far as the diet goes, everything bad is now gone.. The first of the month usually is a great time for a reset. And I've got chicken breast baking now that hat I can freeze and have for about 5 meals. And I actually bought 6 Lean Cuisines at WinCo the other dsy. I know everyone, including my doctor says to avoid processed food but sometimes having a Lean Cuisine just makes it easier just decide what to eat.

I am new to Fat Secret and am glad to see this comment section for motivation and tips. Frizzy 22 you sound like me about 6 months ago. I had knee pain that has bothered me off and on for several years. I finally found something that works and haven’t had pain since. Here’s to improved health for everyone!

Thanks Philwsw! What helps your knee pain.? I'm going to see an orthopedist in about 2 weeks for a 2nd opinion. The first recommended total knee replacement or at least arthroscopic procedure to clean up stuff inside the knee like floating cartilage and a torn meniscus. The longer this goes on the more likely I will have something done

Hang in there, Fritzy. I wish you could get to a pool and do water aerobics or something. Have you asked for PT?

When I moved I took about a year to get through packing and purging, went from a 10 room house to a 6 room and still brought too much with me. I hope you figure out what to do with your knee, I am blessed that my knees are still good. Only have a small back problem that does not stop me from moving, just sleeping!

Thanks Kat but I will never, ever wear a bathing suit in public. I've always hated my legs. Even when I lived in Palm Springs where it would be 100 degrees at midnight. I didn't wear shorts. Only for a brief period in my late 40's when I weighed 130 and ran 4 miles almost every day did my legs get nice enough for shorts! I asked my doctor if PT could help and he arranged for me to start a week from Monday.

Thanks Abba. I packed up lots of stuff in 2021 when I thought I would move. Couldn't find a place to buy. Then last year I went through most of the boxes already packed and got rid of about 1/3 of it! My knee was totally fine until one day when I woke up. I don't think it will keep me from moving, just don't know if I'll need a knee operation before I move or if it can wait

You can wear what looks like running tights and a rash guard top. I’m going swimming, it’s 80 and I don’t want to do what I’m supposed to be doing today. 🤣

Fritzy, if it's a torn meniscus, PT or walking is probably just going to make it more painful, because the torn cartilage catches on things when you move. In my experience, it is an easy fix. Hope the second opinion resolves the issue.

Thanks Shir! I've figured out that walking more than just a few steps can cause pain. My doctor thinks that PT could help. If it hurts me, I'll stop it. What's the easy fix? I'm pretty sure the 2nd opinion will be the same as my own doctor and the first orthopedist, that a total knee replacement is inevitable even if I first get arthriscopic surgery. My primary doctor did say healing is possible, but didn't say how and did say normally healing is easier for younger people

Fritzy, if it's a torn meniscus (the meniscus is a cartilage pad between the upper and lower bones), then it can often be trimmed to smooth out the torn edge, correcting the problem. I'm no doctor, so I certainly don't want to make a diagnosis, nor recommend treatment, I'm just telling you my experience, and my mother's experience. Her doctor was talking about knee replacement, but when we brought her to Houston for a second opinion, the doctor diagnosed a torn meniscus, went in by orthopedic surgery and was able to trim the torn edge, and she recovered completely.

arthroscopic... autocorrect drives me nuts!
27 Feb 24 by member: shirfleur 1
Thanks Shir! The orthopedist first recommended knee replacement then said at least do the arthroscopic surgery where they can trim the meniscus and clean up the floating cartilage. The meniscus is torn almost all the way through. Everyone I know including my brother in law and my house sitter who has had the arthroscopic surgery, has had it multiple times before eventually needing knee replacement. My primary care doctor told me that usually knee replacement is inevitable after arthroscopic surgery. I think because it can cause osteoarthritis or something like that. Will just wait and see. I'm glad your mom didn't need the knee replacement!
