Fritzy 22's Journal, 09 Jan 24

Trying to eat a bland diet for a couple days. Saltine crackers, chicken broth, milk. I believe my body it protesting all the salads and raw vegetables I've been eating lately. Feeling better today but will wait a few days and have more cooked vegetables with a rare salad.

I was able to go back in my FS history so I could see what I was doing when I lost 53 pounds. From August 1,2017 through March 24, 2018 - 7 months I lost 53 pounds. I was new to FS and didn't it food on days I ate off plan. I remember having potato chips and dip days every 2 or 3 weeks! I didn't weigh on the first of the month all the time, but I came up with this history:

Aug 2017 10.4 pounds average 895 calories, 44.59 fat grams, 85.35 carbs
Sept 2017. 10.2 pounds
Oct 2017. 2.4 pounds
Nov 2017. 12.8 pounds
Dec 2017. 3.8 pounds
Jan 2018 5.8 pounds
Feb 2018. 3.6 pounds
March 2018. 4.0 pounds
Total pounds. 53.0

Average calories ranged from 754 to 895
Average protein grams 32.5 to 45.91, usually around 40
Average carbs 70.06 to 100.77
Average fat grams 26.75 to 44.59

I'd be thrilled with those numbers now but aim for higher protein. People will say calories are way too low but I was doing IF just having one main meal, often lots of vegetables in a stir fry. Minimal processed foods. I negotiated with my doctor to allow me 1/4 bagel or 1/2 to slice of bread with hot chocolate. I remember making smoothies a couple times a month with triple berry blend from costco, adding in almond milk, maybe pineapple or orange juice and a little honey. I mixed a can of tuna often with mashed up avocado and chopped nuts and wrapped in lettuce. Was really eating less processed food. I also started walking and after a month or so averaged at least 5 miles a day and then tried to do more walking 10 miles in my neighborhood quite a few times. Things fell apart when allergy season started and I couldn't walk so much, plus it get too hot to walk in the summer. And Girl Scout cookies really did me in. Took over a year, maybe 2 but I gained it all back. Now I've got knee issues and am lucky if I can walk to the corner!

Hope you get to feeling better soon Fritzy! That was a great success you had on the loss. You’ll have more success in the future, too despite that darn knee.

I try to do this as well. Look back to figure out what I did that worked. Just for me I am a lot more worried about keeping as much lean body mass as possible than I am about losing weight fast. I may not have quite thought that way the first time I lost weight which is maybe 15 years ago now...

Thanks moko! I see the orthopedist next week, but the knee feels so much better.

Thanks Liv! I just want to lose at least 1 pound a week. I lost over 12 pounds in November that year and logged what I ate for Thanksgiving. Basically a tablespoon of everything! I learned all the numbers are similar to what I am doing now, but I was eating very little processed food. And the walking was a big deal. I go for walks with Bobby, sometimes 3 or 4 hours up and down hills.

I hope Ortho helps you out with your knee! I'm sure it's painful and frustrating!🩷 I think I may go back and see what I was eating last year at this time. If I remember, I didn't gain any weight over holidays.... but then again, I hadn't turned into cookie monster like I did this year!

Thanks Diana! The knee seems to be getting better every day. I rescheduled the MRI under after I see the specialist thinking he'll say I don't need it. What sticks out to me the most is how little processed food I was eating when I lost the weight. And I even saw I added kidney beans to the only soup I know how to make, A chicken and vegetable soup. Worked hard to get up to 40 protein grams. I ate lots of avocado, using it to replace mayonnaise.

Yep, I very recently returned to FS also and reviewed my history; only lost 35 pounds since 2017 with ups and downs during that time;however, did at one point get within27 pounds of goal. Stabilized at current weight for 13 months, now ready to get serious and get to goal while also getting stronger. Not so easy at 82.5 years young but necessary to defeat a long list of autoimmune disorders, 3 types of arthritis.

Thanks Gopherit, good luck in reaching your goal!

Thanks Novariche, I don,'t do OMAD except once in awhile. I usually have a small piece of something toasted and coffe, sometimes scrambled eggs or oatmeal for breakfast and my main meal anywhere from 11am to 2pm. I have some snacks, like a low fat mozzarella cheese stick and 2 tablespoons of pumpkin seeds or some walnuts or almonds. I gave away my treadmill more than 2 years ago. Did t like it.

Fritzy i also ran super low calories when first trying to lose weight. Prior to joining FS. From 7/22 to about 1/23 or maybe even a few months after i was between 700-800 calories with about 70 grams protein. It was necessary due to adrenal failure. As I’ve added more muscle ive been able to add more calories back tho (not accounting for vey recent events) i still need to be around 1200 or less just to maintain even with 4 mile a day daily walk and 2x a week strength training sessions. I keep telling myself if i could start adding 2 more days a week in our home gym I could eat more. I get hungry both the physical and the emotional kind. How do you keep your calories so low? 1200 i suppose is sustainable for life but it is not very fun to have to budget so low. Even my coffee is 100 calories for the heavy whipping cream i use. Keep reminding yourself that you feel better at a healthier weight. At least that’s what im trying to do. Im sort of counting the month of January as a lost cause till we get the funeral behind us but it is paramount to take care of ourselves right. Good thing you have Bobby to keep you active…speaking of. Please get that mri done. The longer you push it out is not going to make that knee any better. It’s been going on long enough you need answers. Concrete answers.

Sorry I forgot to respond to your remark about possibly all the raw veges..Sadly, I can tolerate one moderate-sized salad a week at the most. I LOVE crisp, fresh, raw but fragile gut can't handle many due to life-threatening episodes twice with sepsis included, on top of celiac. And I too have to resort to a few days of bland foods after over-indulging in raw. Who knew? We keep on keeping on and adjust as needed eh. That's probably true for all of us on FS.

Thanks YOH! Just got back from a rare afternoon walk with Bobby. About 3000 steps but it's something and we went up a small hill. My knee is so much better. Still starts to ache a little at night, so I take ibuprofen so I can sleep. But no .more throbbing pain. I really don't want an MRI. I'm hoping the orthopedist will tell me walking is good for me and maybe send me to Physical Therapy. I keep my calories low by not eating after lunch, usually around noon or 1pm. Small breakfast. I try to keep Portions small. I always said I try to stay around 1000-1200 calories, never intended a really low calorie WOE. It just turns out that way. Especially when I limit processed foods. I got really full eating a stir fry full of vegetables that don't add up to much as far as calories. Poor Bobby is getting very little exercise because of me. The last time we walked may have been last Friday. We've had rainy days or I've been lazy.

Fritzy i just bought my boys winter parkas. Last year they walked with me rain, snow, sun all but hail. Hail is dangerous. Today we went out and holy smokes huge winds and rain and i was kind of miserable and exhilarated at the same time if that makes sense. Little popsicles for hands by the time i got to PT (which is where i work out) but really glad i did it. Why don’t you want an mri? Is it the experience of the tube? Generally you can ask for a headset with music to help.

Thanks Gopherlt! Sorry you have so many health issues to deal with. I sometimes feel cooked vegetables are safer to eat. I used to buy alfalfa sprouts for veggie sandwiches and then read sprouts have made people sick, Sometimes with salmonella or e.coli and to avoid eating them raw. I think there are quite a few people have to take it easy with ratings lots of "plants" after the holidays. Can you eat fruit? I try for only one or 2 servings a day, if that. Best wishes on meeting your goals and I hope you feel better

YOH,Bobby has some nice coats including a raincoat. I'm just getting lazy after more than 2 months of "taking it easy". I know MRIs are expensive although I am on Medicare but in January I'll have to pay the deductible. I don't want to be stuck in a tube for 45 minutes, I can get claustrophobic, plus my primary doctor told me I'd probably get better after 6 weeks or so when I saw him the first time, about 2 weeks into the problem.

I get it but pain and especially pain that is seriously hindering your mobility is no way to live. The headsets do help. I also get a little claustrophobic but have had to have mri’s for my headaches for decades and when music became available it helped. I try to find a lovely memory and relive it while in there. Often i remember being 14 years old and spending days with horse in pasture reading a book while lying on his back or both of us laying on the grass my head on his shoulder. I remember the feel of the warmth of the sunshine, the birds sounds the gentle breeze running over us the feel of his coat under my hands. I find it a very soothing memory for me. Maybe you could do something like that?

YOH, I rescheduled the MRI for the week following the appointment with the orthopedist. He didn't order it, my primary care doctor did. So if I keep walking with Bobby and start getting the throbbing knee pain again, I'll go ahead with the MRI. BTW, I thought that I should compare how I've been how I've been eating recent!y compared to those 7 months I lost weight. The average monthly calories are often over 1000 and I eat more than I think, often having dinner as well as lunch. Sometimes it's a half grilled cheese sandwich or leftover chili or something. I have little covered one up Pyrex dishes I freeze with leftovers. They seem smaller than a cup. Sometimes I'll have something out of the freezer. I still have a tiny bit of leftover roast and one cup of chili. So I'm eating more and more processed food. I'm eating more bread for sure, sometimes 2 slices of toast compared to 1/4 bagel.

Are you wanting to eat more processed food? Or is it just convenient? Ive been eating kind bars because I wasn’t getting enough calories nor do i have time right now and i know thats the dumbest thing i can do for myself is to have 1/3 of my calories from a little kind nut butter bar with truly not much nutritional value. Should have nuts, but i always eat too many so thats tricky.

YOH, I want to eat less processed foods but I hate cooking. But once my stomach feels better I think I'll put the electric wok on the kitchen counter and keep it there. I have 3 or 4 boxes of WonderSlim protein bar and mixes for shakes if I really need something. I bought them last winter when there was so much snow nearby the grocery store near me couldn't get deliveries. Wanted food with protein that didn't need to be cooked in case the power went out. So I'll need to use them up before they expire.

Omg you sound like me. I hate cooking. I will eat the beyond burger (plant based) as they are easy to heat up. 6 min each side on low and they are juicy.
