You just came off a fast Mike, the higher cholesterol is a given: Quote from a study by Internal Medicine World Report: There were some fairly substantial changes [during the fast] which indicated that the liver stopped taking up cholesterol and excreting it, so that you would have it for energy,” said Dr. Horne. “We also confirmed that levels of human growth hormone increased substantially—about 1300% for women and 2000% in men. One of the hormone’s actions is to preserve lean muscle mass, so that it is not metabolized for energy. But HGH increases lipolysis. Perhaps one of the sources of cholesterol is that adipocytes are being burned for energy. It takes about three days for ketosis to occur, but it appears there is such a substantial impact [from the fast] that it starts earlier. There may be a decrease in enough adipocytes that it has a small effect on insulin resistance, so that fasting over a long period of time on a routine periodic basis could have an affect on metabolic risk.” The research team concluded that a 24-hour water-only fast caused an acute increase in total serum cholesterol by raising LDL cholesterol as well as HDL cholesterol. Changes in other risk factors by fasting were found for triglycerides, weight, and glucose, as expected. “This study suggests that the effects of fasting on lipids and how this relates to the risk of coronary artery disease requires further study,” said Dr. Horne.

This was for a 24 hour fast, you did 168, it's got nothing to do with your food intake, it was caused by the fast. Eat for three days and see if they will do another test, your numbers will be more accurate.

Wow, Deb. Good info.

Lady D, this is a common occurrence in the FB group The Fasting Method, it has thousands of fasters and this is a commonly reported occurrence, you are burning fat, so naturally you are going to have a lot of fat in your blood, your body is using it for fuel. The admins recommend eating normally for three days prior to bloodwork so your body switches back to glucose for fuel, because all medical numbers are based on glucose fueled bodies, not fat fueled bodies. Mike, your doctor must recommend statins, because if he does not the insurance companies who get all of your diagnostic and treatment information insist upon it.

Thanks Deb, am going to join that group now

Now THAT I learned from my Doctor, and she told me I have the choice of whether to take the statins or not, but if I choose not to she has to put me down as non-compliant with recommended medical treatment.

I was non-compliant until I began eating normally prior to my bloodwork, when I go now my cholesterol is great and completely normal for a 30 year old :) which I am not! Below 100 total cholesterol. It keeps the powers that be happy.

I figure the margarine/butter which in a day I have 3-4 cups..along with mct oil…might be causing some of it…he knows I fast on a regular basis..I already talked with nurse here…told her what I thought it could be..gonna stop all oil and butter….see when I can take another blood test..see if there’s a down swing….

Cutting out added fats might help, but allowing 3 eating days prior to lab work sounds like it would also help. Margarine? Nooooooo, you are not eating margarine?!? Haven't they outlawed it yet?

Mike you are in assisted living correct??? They follow the old ways and I am sure that low-fat margarine is still on the menu. If it is and that's what you are using in your BPC, yes by all means stop it now, those trans fats are pure poison!

Margarine is one molecule away from being plastic. I don't even let my dogs chew on plastic.
