Fritzy 22's Journal, 30 Mar 23

I got back from my road trip to Washington yesterday, a day late. It was a horrible drive, both ways. 12 hours from my house to my niece's house. I had planned on driving half way, each way and spending a night at a hotel. It was raining and there was a little snow on the way up but not too bad. But coming home it was just awful, and scary. I normally just don't drive when it's raining and really have very little experience driving in snow. I left my niece's house Monday and drove to Roseburg where I spent the night. On Tuesday I headed home. Got to Ashland and I5 south was closed due to blizzard conditions in Northern California. I spent about 5 hours waiting, in a grocery store parking lot to see if the road reopened. It didn't so I got a motel for another night. I left at 6am and everything was okay until I got to Weed, California. Then chains were required. I had bought chains before the trip but I don't know how to install them. When driving to Tahoe when chains are required there are always installers to help. No installers. It took about an hour waiting to get to the exit but they said I could go through because I have AWD on my car. But it was so scary driving through the blizzard. I don't know how to drive in the snow and I saw 2 trucks had slid off the road so I was terrified. I drove about 35 mph. Once the snow was gone it was pouring rain until I got home. A 4 hour drive took 6 hours but I was so relieved to finally get home. I was lucky my pet/house sitter was able to spend the extra night. She had another job after that but told me if I didn't get home yesterday she could come by to give my cat his evening insulin shot. Don't know what I would have done without her. Had a great time with my niece and her husband in Washington.

Didn't eat well while gone. Too many fast food meals on the drive and I went out with my niece once for a deli sandwich (tuna salad, not too bad) and then for fish and chips which were wonderful. I did bad once I got home but doing okay so far today. Took Bobby for a walk this morning, he was so excited! I had walked with my niece every day while in Washington.

Glad to be home. Probably won't go on another road trip for a long time and never if rain is forecast. I knew there would be rain, but never expected a blizzard in the Redding and Lake Shasta area.

I’m so sorry you had a nightmare of a drive! Thankfully you made it home safe and sound and yes, after that I’d be eating bad as well! Good job getting back on track though!

Travel from Calif. to Oregon in the winter is dicey in any year but this year, well, that was not a great idea. I’m glad you made it back ok.

And Washington is even worse this year. Where does your niece live.

Thanks 2melons, SD, and StormsGirl. I worry about long drives anyway but didn't expect a blizzard!

Thanks Morticia. I was so tired when I got home. I had slept very little the night before.

Thanks Diana! The weather at my niece's house was fine so the visit was wonderful. It was just the drive to get there and home that was bad. It would be easier to fly, but I'm even more scared of driving

Thanks Misty! I didn't log food while gone but I stopped at McDonald's on the first day driving to see my niece. I got a milkshake with a burger but no fries. Didn't eat on the road the 2nd day, just eating a protein bar. I had brought some cheese slices, crackers and grapes to eat. On the drive home I stopped at a Dairy Queen and got a blizzard! I had never had one before because there isn't a Dairy Queen anywhere near me. Good thing because I loved the blizzard! Had no idea I'd be driving through one the next day!

Thanks Kenna. 2021 was the first time I ever drove to Oregon. This was my third drive in March. J went to see my niece in the same week last year and the drive was fine. My niece is having her first baby in June so she suggested when to visit since she had Friday off. I also have to plan around when my house sitter is available. I had no idea hos much snow they can get in the Mount Shasta and Redding area! My niece lives in DuPont, not far from Olympia. From her house there are trails we could walk to. We saw deer and a little rabbit in her neighborhood

Thanks Shir! I would have done what the weather forecaster in Oregon had suggested - stay off the road until the roads were better if I didn't have a dog at home as well as a cat who needs insulin shots. I really enjoyed driving around Ashland on the day I was stuck there and would have just stayed another night or two if I could have. But I had no choice
