Lindart's Journal, 09 May 21

I have to say something here, mostly because I see it in my FB calorie-counting groups, and don't often see it here, and that is people who are trying (and succeeding) to lose weight by eating almost nothing but junk food and processed foods, as long as it fits within their calories. Frustrating because wouldn't we all like to do that(!), and because I can't comment on their post when they post something like "look at all the low-calorie foods I found at the grocery today!" and they are all boxes of junk. How to tell them that their health is involved as well as just losing weight without insulting them? Or should I continue to just leave it alone, and hope that someday they will see the error of their ways?

It’s a complicated issue because for some people processed food is the cheapest and most easily accessible food, It requires less time to prepare. Plus sometimes it’s really nice to have sweet stuff and not have to feel guilty about it. We can’t know peoples entire circumstances just from what they post, but I don’t think shaming anyone for what they eat is going to make them want to eat better, it’s probably just going to make them have more shame around what they eat. I think posting what you find to be healthy and easy to make would be better encouragement.

I don’t mean to imply that you have been or want to shame anyone for what they eat.

Probably best to leave it alone when commenting on their page unless they ask for critique. OK to post whatever you want in your journal.

People can only eat so much junk before they tire of it and start looking for other options. When they do, the healthy, nutritious, balanced meals pictured on here are a great place to go for tips and ideas! We can lead by example but whether others follow is ultimately up to them.

PS: Maybe you would like to post on those FB pages about this site? Probably at least some will check it out. If only one person makes positive changes as a result, you will have done them a great service.

I agree with sk.17 because the problem is systemic and needs to be solved by broader organizations such as governments. You can't just pick on every single individual that you catch consuming such food, it will never end for you.

Moreover, if you look at most postings on FS, most of them are at the lowest common denominator in terms of intelligence - what you'll see is people posting pics of their meal, others pretending to be amazed by that, then other folks cheering each other like there's no tomorrow for meaningless things. I think if you're looking for a place of sharing of ideas and self improvement, you will not find it here.

I fell on your question and was surprised to see someone raise an intelligent topic, by the way! 👍😝(Compliment)

why do you care what other people are doing? if it works for them and makes them happy it’s not your concern!

I agree that eventually they will come to understand the health benefits of choosing healthy foods versus processed. Seriously ill people understand this and try to feed their body nutritiously. You might encourage them to continue staying within their caloric limit. Over eating, which leads to illness is a major problem for most of us. Good luck.

I think if they haven’t asked for the advice it’s best to leave it alone.... everyone has their journey. I agree with your logic on healthier options though.

I guess it's in my nature to be concerned over the well being of my fellow humans, I wouldn't stand by, for example, if someone wanted to jump off a bridge. But I think you guys are right, I should just not worry about it.

you may just want to post a picture of whole healthy food with the same amount of calories. processed and junk food have a high calorie content and they may be surprised how much good food you get for the same calories. just post the picture with amount of calories. it may get someone interested.

IME Diet warrioring is 100% futile. Who the fuck cares what other people do? Optimize for your own success. If you want to have an impact, post up your awesome transformation pics with an explanation of how you did it. Let people choose to follow. Or not.

Most people will fall off the wagon if they do nothing but eat “healthy”. The body also needs to be fooled. What you consider healthy someone else may have allergies to. You need to relax and worry about only you. I eat healthy for awhile and then I don’t. It’s that simple. And when I’m not if someone has some low calorie cheat foods I’m all over it!!

In my experience this isn’t a knowledge gap issue. They know low calorie processed turkey pepperettes are basically garbage. It’s a matter of acceptance. They’re not willing to eat mostly healthy food. So pointing it out to them won’t change the behaviour. It’s frustrating to watch people do stuff like this when it seems so simple to others, but there really is nothing we can do until they want to accept that low cal junk food is still junk food.

My take on this is that these people are sharing their fast-food and processed food options that fit their diet for these times when one does not feel like cooking. Obviously it is not healthy to eat like this every day and long-term. You seem to be doing great, so the more healthy you eat, the better.
