-Diablo's Journal, 29 Apr 21

So, I was going through an old thread I started on bodybuilding.com where I conducted a diet experiment consisting of 99% "junk" food. I went from ~220 to 176 at my lowest in 8-10 months. In these pics I am 220(Aug. 2011) and 182(Jun 2012) pounds. Not only was it mostly pizza, ice cream, cookies, cakes, etc, my protein was also low. I averaged 2800 calories and only 90 grams of protein. It was about half of what I am getting now and it was mostly from pizza so most likely not the same quality as I am getting now with supplements, meat, and Greek yogurt.

The reason I did this diet was because I didn't quite believe the experts advising that calories are what matter, not processed food vs whole food. I didn't believe it because even while eating clean I could never get to this point so how is pizza going to help? Well, for me, it helped me mentally and seeing the week to week progress was super motivating so that also helped me adhere to my calorie goals. Restrictive diets just caused me to binge eventually erasing most of my progress.

Anyway, the reason I am posting is to show people they don't have to be so strict with what they eat. Sure, try to eat healthy, try to get more protein than I was, but as you can see, total calorie in vs. out is what matters for fat loss.

If these results can be had with a terrible diet and low protein, then people beating themselves up for not being perfect seems counter productive and dramatic. It only served to stress you out and cause derailment. A little progress every week and patience is what is needed to get to your goal and remain there.

Have a moderate deficit and exercise. Get your protein, vitamins, and fiber for health.

These pics make me realize how much progress I've made on my leg size, lol! Another reminder of how important progress pics are. I don't see it since I see them every day but it's obvious where the last 15-20 pounds went. I'm bigger all over but mostly the legs.

For anyone interested, here is my thread where you can see my foods and CICO for the whole journey. https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=141807961&page=2

Lol at the Photobucket stamp. This is the only place I have this after pic now and I am not paying their monthly fee so I have to deal with it. Does anyone even use that site anymore?

Wow! Under the right circumstances, our bodies know how to make good use of bad diets.

Yep, calories are king and resistance training is queen for body composition. Diet quality matters for long term health, though!

Also, don't get me wrong, I do believe my results are even better with a higher protein percentage but this shows that even with a low percentage, results are fine. I was also able to bench twice my body weight and run 10 miles non-stop easily by the end. Obviously, my squat was not up to par. This was after recovering from sciatica which is why I was in such bad shape and why my legs were small.

But 100 calories of broccoli isn't the same as 100 calories of cookies...j/k different results from TEF are explained by CICO too. I hope people realize they don't have to fight a losing battle and go on and off super restrictive diets, but these discussions always come back to broccoli vs. cookies, even though it's been addressed a million times.

More nutrition and satiety from broccoli, for sure. Also your will to live. Just kidding, it's ok steamed haha

Where do I get my broccoli, you ask? Chinese buffets. :D

Roasted with a light drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Yum.

Great post! Great pics! Your legs are definitely better now but I think they were good then. The top pic just makes them seem smaller in proportion to your upper body. 😁 Very proud of you! 💪🏼🏋️‍♂️🤸‍♀️

Thanks, wife! I didn't think so either back then. I do now though, haha!

Excellent post. I’ll continue my WOE just as it is. Nothings restricted. 😊💪🏻

Excellent work! Resistance + caloric restriction is the key. Cole Robinson (fasting proponent) did a similar experiment - like a reverse Super Size Me - where he ate at McDonald's every day for 30 days and tried to offset the negative effects with a combination of lifting and fasting. Lifts up, fat down, and, shockingly, his bloodwork actually improved. There was also some professor who cut weight eating nothing but Twinkies, no training. Keep up the great work.

I cannot help but be reminded of that FS old timer Oliver, who used to post epic multipage rants against the protein industry....

the funny part is how we (and I include myself) argue and defend what we do. when in truth that's what works for us as Individuals. my woe may not be sustainable for someone else I prefer boring and predictable. in truth it's all about the deficit no matter how that's obtained. the thing I've had to retrain my brain on is cico. it's not a woe. it's a rule. or a principal. more out than in equals a deficit. kinda like I can't go 500 miles in my truck without refueling for the simple fact the tank only holds 26 gallons. there's a deficit. great post as always man.

and what about brocoli cookies? 2 birds one stone. just a thought.

Lol! I remember Oliver, Jimmie. I did watch the Cole Robinson Down Size Me on youtube as well. Here is a link to the Mark Haub "Twinkie" diet. http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html

Diablo, great timing. We received a delivery of meat yesterday and had to make room in the freezer, so out came the corn dogs. I was a bit reluctant to have one, because I had eaten a Nathan's chili dog the day before. I had it anyway and this morning I am down a pound! Hahaha. 😁 I wonder if anyone has created a Hot Dog diet? 🌭🤔
