Kenna Morton's Journal, 22 Dec 19

You know the old saying that something or other put a “monkey wrench” into a plan or situation? Well, this little guy below looks like my life right now— my entire life is a monkey wrench due to sick sister and her sick boyfriend issues. But that is not what I am writing about. I don’t have any problem dealing with the medical issues or the actual emotional issues related to this complex situation. That is after all what I spent 40+ years doing for a living. I managed the illness and death of both my parents and the illnesses and deaths of several other people in my world. I can shut my emotional connection to a situation “off” just like turning a key. Sounds good but not always. But what you can’t turn off is your body’s response to these stressful things. It is so important to recognize this and deal with it. Part of how you do that is to feed yourself in the healthiest manner possible. Fruits, vegetables, foods high in antioxidants , no alcohol (contributes to depression), limit processed foods and added sugars, drink water, Try to sleep and here is that dreaded word EXERCISE. No ball busting weightlifting required. If you can manage to just walk at a good pace for 30 minutes it can do so much for your body’s ability to relieve stress. And, don’t all these things sound like what many of us here are trying to do anyway— eat healthier to not only improve our physical health but our mental health as well. There is a direct link between mental health and our gut bacteria. Hang in there everyone— this is turning out to be a really tough Holliday season for many people in my world and also in our FS world. We can all get through this but you have to put the oxygen on yourself first. You can’t care for others if you don’t take care of yourself FIRST.

I am feeling all of this friend 😞 I’m exhausted. I’m thankful my sister is in rehab, I know it wasn’t her choice as she didn’t bring herself. Our father got cancer 😞😔😢 she didn’t help. This family comes from a divorced situation. My sisters grief turned from alcohol to drugs. I have my aunt and uncle wanting to stay at our house the day after Christmas as everyone is back to work, my sister is in rehab, yes I’m off... but stressed the heck out. We made sure our nieces and nephew would have a Christmas like last year but like a Christmas like they where ours.... well life is funny and decides to throw unexpected things in your way

Jc— if your aunt and uncle have the guts to expect to stay with you under your stressful circumstances, you need to stand up and tell them you are barely coping and keeping it together for Christmas and you need time to regroup. Don’t let yourself get worn down. Hang in there but protect yourself.

I ALWAYS say to my daughter, I workout not for physical looks at all, but more for my mental health than anything else. It is so true what you said. A lot going on in my world too, not a lot that’s good atm, but I press on and keep my oxygen mask on at all times, ready to go to war!!!! Thanks for this. You show us it can be done. But turning off the emotional side is much harder for me. I feel very weak and worn these days, I feel like the monkey wrench looks!! LOL

Happy Holidays and thanks for the reminder to put the oxygen mask on first.

Wifey— I can only turn that emotional key to the “off” position because I have had many years of experience dealing with horrific situations then just moving on to the next one. That ability has served me well but it also has its down side.
