Fritzy 22's Journal, 06 Dec 19

Someone had written in a journal about how you burn more calories standing than sitting or lying down. Don't remember the exact details. But it made me realize how sedentary I am. I am either sitting or lying down in bed most of the day. Watching TV, looking at my Kindle Fire (reading, playing games) or just watching the wild life outside. So I am trying (today is day 1) to spend more time on my feet. Walked with Bobby this morning for an hour and 45 minutes and since then have been doing things outside in the yard before the rain starts later this afternoon. And standing to cook. Scooping litter boxes, dusting furniture. Anything to avoid going to "rest" in bed. Maybe my house and garage will get clean if I am able to focus on this. I've been cutting up cardboard boxes in the garage to recycle. So far today, including the walk 3 1/2 hours of NOT resting! But now I'm tired. It's not yet noon.

I actually researched a sit/stand desk for my office. Maybe that is what I need for Christmas.

That tracker I bought has an alarm that reminds me 'get up & move!' if I sit too long. I'm not wearing it right now.. but if I did.. that'd be so effective. Haha. I agree, standing burns more than sitting; I too have made myself stand up more to do things.

I have the same problem when its time of the year. When the days start to become longer Dec 21 I start getting more motivated. I use to think it was psychological.

Good job being active! Makes me tired too but those days have a higher calorie burn which I like.

That is excellent! keep up the good work. Just don't over do it. Remember the key is sustainability. I highly recommend using Google Fit with this app. It breaks down your need activity for you in Move Minutes and Herot Points in consideration of Recommendations for an Active and Healthy Lifestyle by the American Heart Association.

Sounds like you have accomplished a lot! Yes!! I also read before the same thing about standing vs sitting and therefore do the same as much as possible. I think you did awesome. I also 2nd Google fit, it helps give you an idea of how much you have moved and you can set goals for yourself.

Thanks Jazzy, Bella, KetoBruce, Peeperjj, Sundayfunday, Eat_little - The walk I did today is the same walk I would do 2 years ago almost daily. Then I stopped when allergy season started and I have been walking recently, but usually 30-40 minutes. So doing just under 2 hours was great. I hope to keep it up and get back to where I was 2 years ago - I would walk for hours, sometimes 10 miles or more in my very hilly neighborhood. Today was good. Standing isn't hard, and I need to pay attention to how much of the day I am sitting or just lying in bed watching TV. I don't usually log "exercise", just walking, but I logged some of the time as "standing" when I was up and about doing just household stuff. I don't know what Google fit is. I can look into it. I don't use apps on my cell phone, I have a very cheap plan that allows very little time online. I use the phone only for texting and taking pictures. I use my laptop for FS or my Kindle Fire when I am away from home.

Thanks Liv! Funny I've got the idea of getting up off my butt and moving around a little, even if it's just in the house, so much on my mind that I'm having a hard time getting ready to go to sleep. I usually fall asleep around 9pm (which is why I wake up at 3 or 4am). But I was in bed watching TV for about 5 minutes and noticed the standing fan in the corner. I only need it in the summer to help keep the house cool. So I got up and took the fan down to the garage. Then I started cleaning the counter in the master bath - I feed my cat on the counter otherwise the dog would eat all the cat food. It's 9:20 and I'm still looking for things to do.

Fritzy...I really believe it can make all the difference in the world! Bought my husband a standing desk last year and he loves it. Aside from the calorie burn, they say sedentary is the new "smoking". Don't ask me who 'they' is...but I believe it. I try to be up a lot more often. It gets to where it is really noticeable when you're sitting too long.

I sometimes watch TV doing some walk in place exercises.... if I am alone.

DP - I've heard the same thing about sedentary being the new "smoking". I am trying, but yesterday it was much easier than today. No walk outside, the wind is blowing like crazy, all kinds of little twigs and broken branch pieces are all over the deck. It's been raining and I guess I'm feeling lazy today. Liv - I do have a treadmill that I hate, but have been thinking of pulling out in front of the TV. Anna Bear - sounds like a good little workout!

Well- you don't have to get crazy. Just maybe do some leg raises during commercial breaks or stand up a bit and walk around more. Yes- some days I'm moving and moving and other days.... eh.. not so much!
