There was a big fire in my apartment complex, burned about 18 units. So sorry for all the folks who lost everything. Fortunately, no one was injured. The complex is quite large, and the fire was in the front, and I live in the back, so I wasn't even aware of what was going on, but it made me think about something. I don't always sleep well at night, so I often sleep during the day, and I sleep very hard. I've had people bang on my door and even on my bedroom window and slept right through it. The other morning I slept through a clock alarm that was on my nightstand, about a foot from my head. If anyone had banged on my door and yelled "fire" I could very easily have slept right through it, and since many people are not home during the day, people could have assumed I wasn't home. This is a rather troubling thought. I know this post has nothing to do with weight loss, I just felt a need to share my concerns.

Thanks Saul. No one was injured, and the complex requires that you carry renter's insurance, so everyone had at least some insurance, thank goodness. Management has found apartments for everyone who was displaced. This complex has a great management team, it's a good place to live.

First, very glad you are safe and no one was hurt. Scary situation. There are smoke detectors that have a voice alarm as well as the siren. Cheap way to add a little peace of mind. Also know that firefighters will break down doors/windows if they know someone's in there. Talk to your neighbors, let them know you sleep during the day and don't wake up.

Thanks Kat, good advice. The management office knows that I am usually home during the day and that I often sleep and don't wake up.

Thank God you are alright! It IS a sobering thought that you might have slept through it. I'm glad God protected you from harm!

They’ve done studies that children often sleep through smoke detector and other alarms. They developed detectors that say their name in their mother or fathers voice, and that worked to wake them up. Would something like that work for you? Maybe something to check into... although, the odds of another fire in your building are probably low, it might be good to figure out what would wake you in an emergency.

check with your local fire department and see what you can do they may have some ideas. I had a fire once and it sticks with you for a long long time. If you have a hard line there may be a list that you can get on for them to call you? If you are a frequent day sleeper you may want to let them know they might have a data base or something, or a sticker on your window? I don't know if you want to advertise that though. Good Luck!
