I had a wonderful birthday. Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday.

My daughter will be 17 on Tuesday. I have no idea where the time went. She was just a little girl and now she is only 2 years away from graduating high-school. Time sure does fly. Most of her life I was obese. Our diet's consisted of a lot of fast food and there wasn't a lot of healthy food in the house. I wouldn't even look twice at the produce department at the grocery store. Looking back, I wish I would of cooked healthy meals. I just felt lazy and depressed. I didn't want to do anything to help myself. I was just giving up and beginning to accept it. Now I am worried that it is too late to change her idea of a healthy diet. I think I tarnished it. I have been trying to incorporate more healthy foods into her diet. She doesn't eat that many unhealthy things now, but she still wants them. Have I done irreversible damage?

is she overweight?

No, you are the proof. She can have it from time to time, with friends and eating healthy at home. Take care both of you :-)

Happy Birthday, I think the young ones will do what they will. Eating healthy happens. My son ate hearty meals at home and now he and his wife are extremely healthy type people. They eat lean and mean. Their lifestyle is a very athletic one so they eat to win. Jetski racers. So you never know what your daughter will end up enjoying for a lifestyle

It’s very hard to change our routine that was established by the family. Have you had a chance to sit down with your daughter on this subject?

I know how you feel. I changed my eating habits but my children (two girls aged 15 and 9) haven't changed theirs. Of course I feel guilty, just like you do, but we shouldn't... it's never too late and people should be able to make their own choices, just like you did. My youngest one has been trying to change her habits - eating more fruits and vegetables - but my oldest one seems to be crusading against my new way of life. She keeps saying she loves sugar and she'll never change it because she's ok with it... teenagers, what can one do? I've decided to let her take her time.

keilin-4, She is not considered overweight. She is about 117lbs and is 5ft 3 in. tall. She thinks she is fat. Over the last year, she has started to get a belly and her thighs have gotten bigger. I actually took her to the doctor because she had marks on her thigh. Found out it was stretch marks. I didn't think that her thigh was big enough to even get those.

Being self employed, I too took the easy route when it came to feeding my kids. Strangely enough my boys are both very health conscious and fit however, my daughter is a "junk food junkie". I say strangely enough because, my boys who live thousands of miles away from me, look to me was a role model and inspiration ( in their own words ), yet my daughter who lives with me doesn't. So I think only time will tell how and if your daughter will stay eating healthy after seeing you turn your life around. Try not to let the guilt get to you. If anything you have taught your daughter that it's never too late to take control of your life in a positive and healthy way.

My 12 year old is 5’2 1/2 and 110#. She found stretch marks the other day and thinks she’s getting fat. I keep explaining that becoming a woman generally means getting some hips lol. She grew about 6” in just a few weeks so I think that’s where the stretch marks came from. I think she has more muscle than me 😢! Now my 9 year old is thinking she might be getting fat! She’s a shorty and has stayed 62# for like 2 years now! I think they see is dieting and ‘losing fat’ and it makes them more aware. Then add in their ages and being a kid just makes them worry about silly things (ya know how kids blame themselves for everything and I think that contributes).

No, it is not irreversible damage and you are modeling healthy eating for her now. Don't model beating yourself up over things you can't change!

We all want the best for our children. Our actions are powerful. Yes she saw and lived what you did as she grew up but now she is seeing and living you making a sincere effort to make a change. Talk to her in a straightforward manner about why you are making these changes and why you have no intention of returning to old habits. This too is a life lesson for her. All of us can change our habits and decide to embrace something different. She is seeing that in action. Very powerful.

Never too late. My older daughter cooks well for herself and my younger daughter has become a vegetarian against my personal point of view about meat.

Happy belated birthday! Kids - young people change weight up and down due to many reasons. You are a model for her, don't worry :-)
