Another PM answer—- yes I have had the occasion to offer wt. loss support to several people with morbid obesity. This particular person was my first. She was a member of the gym I went to. We met in the pool where she exercised in the water every day. She was over 400 lb. maybe 425.. she was a singer at the Birdcage Theatre at one of SoCal’s tourist attractions. She was suffering from depression from both social isolation and the weight beginning to interfer with her livelihood— singing.

It was the habit of all the people she worked with to go out for pizza and beer every Friday night. She had become reluctant to continue to go because she knew she had no business eating it. So she stayed home and became socially isolated and her depression deepened.

We sat down together and developed a WOE that meet both needs. During the week she adhered to her program and on Friday night 1-2 pieces of pizza (depending on the size of the slices) and a beer were built into her diet. She also religiously continued at the pool and once she was able to move more easily, machine work, weights and walking were added.

At one point she was whining about the slow 1/2 pound a day loss— feeling like it wasn’t worth it. So I asked her how much she thought she might weigh in 1 year, 2 years if she quit?? Who knows-right? But if you stay on the program and continue to loose JUST 1/2 lb a day, one year from now you will weigh 180 lb less. She got the point.

Bottom line was that 2 years later she was down 250 lb and was an entirely different person. She never looked back and continued on leading a much healthier lifestyle.

Thanks for the comments. I do this site keeping track of where my basic nutrition is but I read what so many people are going through and I feel bad. They are so overthinking it and creating stress for themselves. There is no magic. Pick a WOE, commit to following it and keep putting one foot ahead of the other. Literally. Exercise is important not only for wt. management but for a healthy heart, healthy bones and mental relief of stress. This can be done. I have many people who will attest to it and without all the trauma drama that so many of these members are induring. It is consuming their lives where they should be outside playing.
